Libyan Dictator Is Killed
Two months after being overthrown, Muammar el-Qaddafi is killed as battles continued in the North African nation(By Steph Smith)
-lead(書き出し文)-
People across Libya poured into the streets today, cheering and honking car horns after learning that rebel forces had killed Muammar el-Qaddafi (moo-am-mar ehl-kah-dah-fee), the dictator who had ruled Libya for more than four decades.
Qaddafi had been in hiding since being overthrown by the rebels two months ago. After he was ousted, the fighting between the rebels and forces loyal to Qaddafi continued. Libyan officials said Qaddafi was killed in his hometown of Surt, as rebels took control of the town from Qaddafi’s forces. The officials also said that Qaddafi would have been given a fair trial if he had been captured alive.

A Revolution Begins
The revolt that toppled Qaddafi began last February, when thousands of protesters began to call for their leader to step down. Qaddafi refused and ordered his military to attack the protesters, who then organized their own army and began battling Qaddafi’s forces for control of the country.
The U.S. and other nations helped the rebels. Warplanes from the U.S., France, and Great Britain launched air strikes against Qaddafi’s forces.
Qaddafi’s Rise to Power
Qaddafi ruled Libya for more than 40 years. After rising to power, he abolished the country’s constitution and established his own laws. He jailed or killed people who opposed him and limited the freedoms of the Libyan people.
Qaddafi grew wealthy from selling his nation’s vast reserves of oil. But he did little to help Libya’s struggling population. He also used his riches to fund terrorist attacks against other nations.
Wave of Protest
The revolt in Libya has been one of many uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East this year. Protesters in Tunisia and Egypt forced their leaders to step down. Those protests inspired people across the region to demand more freedoms from their governments, in what has become known as the “Arab Spring.” Dictators in some countries, such as Syria, remain in power and are violently cracking down on protesters.
Libya’s future is uncertain. The country now has a temporary government. Setting up a permanent government that gives people more freedoms won’t be easy after so many years of being under a dictatorship. But Libyans are hopeful that with Qaddafi’s death, the major fighting in Libya may finally be over.
