Historical Drama "Atsuhime" Eps. 4

Nariakira succeeds as the head of the Satsuma clan. Although Nariakira is active in reform, Kichinosuke and other young samurai are impatient that Shosuke is not granted clemency. Meanwhile, Nariakira officially invites members of Shimazu's branch families to his place. On the day of Okatsu's visit, she asks Nariakira why he has not pardoned Shosuke.

Auberginefleur's Synopsis (done from memory, so there may well be errs):

Shimazu Nariakira succeeds as the head of the Satsuma clan, but Naogoro and his friends worry about the regulation of the rice price and are frustrated that Shosuke has not been pardoned yet. Naogoro and Atsuhime (still called Okatsu as a child) visits Naogoro’s tutor to ask his opinion, and the tutor says something to the effect that faith is the way of loyalty.

In the meantime, Nariakira invites members of his branch families for an audience. Before Atsuhime’s family visits, her father subjects her to practicing in a lady-like manner what she will say to Nariakira. When they practice what she will say when asked what her interests are, she replies reading documents, and her father says, couldn’t she say something like flower arranging or the incense ceremony. She replies that her father told her not to lie, then she escapes from practice to go make dinner.

On the day of the visit, Atsuhime is the last to have an audience. Everything starts off well and Nariakira is amused when she says her interest is reading documents, especially since all the other young ladies had indeed said things like flower arranging.. The tutor is there as Nariakira’s assistant and he explains that once Atsuhime even dressed up as a boy to attend his lectures.




As Nariakira leaves, Atsuhime makes a loud sigh of relief which catches his attention and leads to further discussion. Atsuhime admits that she was tutored in her answers by her father and remembers that she was suppose to show Nariakira the Buddhist amulet he gave her father on her birth (and also a matching one for Naogoro). Then she can’t help herself and asks about he rice problems and whether Shosuke will be released from house arrest. Nariakira promises that he will do so, but also adds that those who do not trust him should leave the fiefdom. Atsuhime is worried that she antagonized Nariakira and whether he will really keep his promise, and if not that it will be her fault.

At the end of the show, Nariakira remarks to the tutor that he would like to meet Atsuhime again.
