現在秋葉原を歩けば多くのメイドさんたちを見かけることができる。彼女達のほとんどはメイド喫茶のアルバイトとして店の宣伝をしているのである。メイド喫茶と聞くとここ数年にできたもののように思えるが実はその歴史は古い。
今をさかのぼること55年前の昭和26年、秋葉原に一人の若い女性が切り盛りする小さな居酒屋があった。その女性の名は長倉マミ（当時16歳）である。幼くして母を空襲で亡くした彼女は苦しい生活を支えるために父の居酒屋の仕事を手伝っていた。しかし、その父も病気で倒れてからは代わって店の仕事を全て任されることになる。体力的にも精神的にもいっぱいいっぱいでありながらも、マミはしんどそうな顔は誰にも見せなかった。そんな健気なマミの姿を見て心を打たれたイギリス人男性のブロンソン（当時27歳）がマミにとあるものをプレゼントした。それがメイド服である。継ぎ接ぎされた服しか着たことのないマミにとってそれは高級着物同然のものだった。マミは早速メイド服をブロンソンに着て見せた。喜んだブロンソンは「Mami!Turn!（マミ、回ってみせて）」と言ったが、英語の分からないマミは「マミさん」を「マミたん」と言い違えてると勘違い。しかしその響きが気に入ったマミは居酒屋の名前を「まみたん」に変える。これが萌えキャラの名前を「○○タン」と呼ぶことの始まりとされている。マミはその後ブロンソンから貰ったメイド服を着て仕事に出た。当時メイド服など知らない日本人にとってはその姿は異色なものであったが、評判はよく店は大繁盛。店の規模も大きくなり従業員も増えた。昭和33年マミはブロンソンと結婚し店を売却。マミがいなくなってからは「メイド」の存在がなくなり普通の居酒屋になったと言われている。
