リスニング徹底トレーニング 6/30(金)

・Turn to the side, would you? 「横を向いてくれるかな？」
５月に聞いたときも"with you"って聞こえて、悩んだんですよねぇ。

・offer a taste : 味見を勧める
これも最初意味が分からなかった。今回もぱっと分かりませんでした。

今夜はワールドカップ、ドイツ対アルゼンチンですね。楽しみです。

ここ数日トークマスター２の録音時のビットレートをいろいろ試しています。
これはあくまで我が家の受信環境での話だとは思いますが、参考までに書きます。
まず、デフォルトの32Kbpsですが、このままだと"こもった"音になってしまいますので、いつもは64Kbpsで録音しています。
256kbs, 128kbpsと試してみましたが、ＡＭラジオ特有の高音の雑音"サー音"が大きくなってしまい、かえって聞きにくくなりました。
96kbpsは、64Kbpsと同じくらいに感じました。(もしかしたら少し音声がクリアかも？しれません)
ということで、とりあえずは、これまで通り、64Kbpsで録ればいいかなと思っています。
でも、これをＣＤに焼いてカーステレオで聞くと、カーステレオのＡＭラジオで聞くよりも"サー音"が大きくてちょっといまいちではあります。
トークマスター２をお持ちの皆さんはどのビットレートを使っていますか？

リスニング徹底トレーニング 6/27(火)

Let's Listen and Write! の(1)は、前回とまったく同じ間違いをしてしまいました。。

watch it の it を抜かしたり、
前回から「進歩なし」です。。

その代わり、(2)は正しく書けました。

リスニング徹底トレーニング 6/26(月)

今日からリスニング徹底トレーニングの再放送・復習です。

今日は、なんと全問正解でした。
「あっ、ここはjustじゃなくて、adjustだったんだよなぁ。」
なーんて、前回の放送を思い出しました。
これでは厳密には力がついたとは言えませんね(笑)。

リスニング徹底トレーニング 6/24(土)

Let's Listen and Answer!は全滅でした。難しいです。

Take that cup of coffee off the table, please.
I just finished polishing(磨く) the tabletop, and I don't want any coffee rings(コーヒーの輪っか) on it.
Setting down(置く) a hot cup of coffee will always ruin(台無しになる) a freshly polished wooden tabletop.
Worse yet(もっとひどい場合は), you might spill(こぼす) it, and that would ruin our lace tablecloth, too.
First wipe up(ふき取る) the wet spot, then use this coaster.

6/26(月)からは復習の一週間なので、新規の放送は今日で終わり。
３ヶ月も続いている。
信じられません。
身についているかはハテナですが。。

音読徹底トレーニング 6/23(金)

英語口でおなじみのtackyが出ました。
英語口では「派手な」と訳されていましたが、「安っぽい」の方が合いそうですね。

(2) Blouse
My husband gave me this blouse. 「夫がこのブラウスを私にくれたの。」
イギリスではブラウズで、アメリカではブラウスなのかな？

I know it looks tacky. 「安っぽく見えるのはわかってるわ。」
ここでtacky登場。

This kind of shirt is way out of style. 「この手のシャツは全然はやってないし。」
way out of style

Bur it's the thought that counts. 「でも、気持ちが大切なのよね。」
ぜひそのまま覚えたい表現です。

Wearing it makes me feel good. 「このブラウスを着ると気分がいいんですもの。」
6/14に習った、動名詞を主語にするパターンです。


その他、今回も覚えたい表現がいっぱいです。

・as much as 「～と同じくらい」
・as I get older 「年を取るにつれ」
・insulting 「失礼な、侮辱的な」
・as though = as if 「～かのように」

It all depends on the amount of practice you put in.
「すべてはあなたの練習量にかかっているのです。」

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/22(木)

Your English will get rusty if you neglect your daily practice.
「毎日練習しないとあなたの英語はさびついてしまいますよ。」

rusty :
1. metal that is rusty is covered in rust
2. if you are rusty, you are not as good at something as you used to be, because you have not practised it for a long time

neglect :
1. to fail to look after someone or something properly
2. to pay too little attention to something

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/21(水)

・classy 「しゃれた、センスのいい」 : fashionable and expensive

いつものLONGMANの「WORD FOCUS」の"good"ですが、こんなにいろいろな言い方があるんですね。
・very good : excellent, fantastic, wonderful, great, terrific, neat, superb, amazing, outstanding, brilliant, impressive, fine, first-class, out of this world
・of good quality : high quality, top quality, superior, deluxe, classy
・morally good : decent, virtuous, respectable, honourable, upright, beyond reproach

・I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. 「もらい物にけちをつけるべきじゃない。」
贈り物の馬の口の中を見るべきでない。馬は歯で年齢を推定するので、もらった馬の歯を見るということは、まだ働ける若い馬かそれとも役立たない老いた馬かどうか確認をすることを意味し、馬の贈り主に対し失礼な行為なのだそうです。おもしろいですね。

・I'm jealous. 「うらやましいな。」

・comfy 「快適な、心地よい」 : comfortable

・fad 「一時的流行」 : something that people like or do for a short time, or that is fashionable for a short time

「努力しなければ成功しません。」

以前はトークマスター2でラジオ講座を録音し、ビーマスターにSDカードを移して、通勤の車の中でも聞いていたのですが、
最近は子供が、早朝に録音しておいた基礎英語をビーマスターで夕方に聞くようになったので、車の中ではラジオ講座を聞くことができませんでした。
そこで、MP3から音楽CDに変換して4月と5月の音読徹底トレーニングのCDを作りました。
初めての試みでしたが簡単にできるものなのですね。
これで車の中で音読徹底トレーニングのシャドーイングができます。
録音時のビットレートは64Kbpsで録っているのですが、CDに落とすとなると、もっと高レートにすると違いますかね？
今度試して音を比較してみたいと思います。

玉田のシュートは本当にきれいに決まった。
その瞬間は信じられなかった。
もしかしたら。。と本当に思った。

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/20(火)

・have something to do with 「～と何か関係がある」

・adorable 「可愛らしい」

・bobble 「ひょこひょこ上下に動く」「毛糸球」「ファンブル」
・babble 「ざわめき」「意味のない音を発する」
・bubble 「泡」

・stare 「じろじろ見る」

・a gust of wind 「突風」

Don't say,"I'm too tire to practice today."
「今日は疲れていて練習できない。と言わないでくださいね。」

「柳沢。。」とあちこちでため息が聞こえてきましたが、"Don't even say it." もう言うのはやめましょう。
職場でも「ゴンだったら、体ごと行った。」「大黒だったら。。」なんていう話になりましたが、Ａさんの「巻だったら頭で行った。」には笑えました。
ブラジル相手にどんなサッカーを見せてくれるか、金曜日の早朝は気合入れて観戦したいと思います。

今日のLet's Listen and Write!の1問目。

I'm going to (one) on Saturday.
Why don't you come with me?

2行目のoneがまったく思いつきませんでした。
be going toなのだと思い込んでしまい、動詞(go)が来るんじゃないのかなあと思いつつ、「ワーノンサタデイ」と聞こえて、？？状態でした。
I'm goingはgoの現在進行形で、one＝baseball gameなのですね。
ややこしいなあ。。

The harder you work, the more satisfying the result will be.
「もっと頑張ればもっと満足できる結果が出ます。」

徹底トレーニング英会話の７月号のテキストを買ってきました。
巻頭インタビューはジュリアさんです。
私はいつも元気なジュリアさんの声が大好きです。
ヨガ、ベジタリアン、瞑想。
うーん、スピリチュアルです。
ビーチで海水の中で出産されたとか。すごい。。

Let's Review! 6/15(木)

Don't let yourself think that there's a shortcut to improve your English.
「英語上達への近道があると思ってはいけません。」

ちょっと疲れ気味だったので、毎日放送は聞いていましたがＰＣの電源を入れることなく寝ていました。
ＰＣ入れるとブログを書くだけで終わらずに夜中までネットサーフィンしてしまうんですよね。。
それではこれから３日分の復習です。

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/14(水)

・It's all yours.「好きに使って。」

・Not exactly.「ちょっと違うわね。」
この表現もちゃんと覚えたいです。

・Just listening to English won't teach you to speak it.「英語を聞いているだけでは話せるようにはならない。」
日本語訳をヒントにディクテーションしていて"teach"と聞こえはしたが、なぜここで"teach"なのか釈然としませんでした。
何度も何度も考えて、なるほどこういう使い方があるんですね。

Daily practice is the best way to improve.
「毎日練習することが上達するための一番の方法なのです。」

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/13(火)

・What if「～したらどうか(提案)」
ジーニアスによれば、「if節に仮定法過去形を用いるとより遠回し的になる。」のだそうです。スキットの例文はそうですね。

・～ is out 「～はだめだよね。」

・I doubt ～「～とは思えないね」

・by then「その時までに」

・not patient enough to put up with「～にはとても我慢ができない」

Move forward step by step.
「一歩ずつ前進していきましょう。」

昨日は残念でした。私は素人なのであれこれ言うのはやめましょう。残り２試合も厳しいですが、静岡県民としては、高原にぜひ点を取って欲しいです。

しかし、最近思うんです。
私は小学生の頃はサッカー少年団でしたが、当時、日本がワールドカップに出るなんて考えられませんでした。はっきり言って別世界のものでした。
三菱ダイヤモンド・サッカーを見ながら世界のサッカーにドキドキしたものです。
その日本がワールドカップに３大会連続出場。日本サッカーは強くなったなあと。
しかし、強豪国との差はまだまだあります。
言い換えればまだまだ強くなれるということです。そのためにも、残り２試合。いい試合を期待しています。

昨日は奈良へ行って来ました。
帰ってきたらバタンキューでしたので、トークマスター２で録音しておいた放送を先ほど聞きました。

今日のディクテーション間違いは？

・ad in the paper「新聞に載っていた広告」
・you should have it looked at.「見てもらうべきだよ。」

その他の覚えたい表現

・in another 20 minutes or so.「あと２０分かそこらで」
"or so"は水曜日のスキットにも出ていました。

・Don't worry about a thing.「何も(一つも)心配することはないよ。」
・It's nothing to worry about.
同じ意味で二つの例文が出てきました。


圭南先生、今日のメッセージはリアルです。

You're never too busy to do a minute or two of practice.
「どんなに忙しくても１、２分の練習ができないということはありません。」

はい。その通りでございます。。

Let's Read Out Loud! 6/9(金)

・help yourself to a beer and sit down.「自分でビールを取って、座ってよ。」
help yourself (to something) : to take some of what you want, without asking permission - used especially when offering food to someone

・I promise to make it up to you some time.「いつか埋め合わせをするって約束するから。」
make (it) up to somebody : to do something to show that you are sorry about the problems you have caused someone

・蛇口
faucet : (American English) the thing that you turn on and off to control the flow of water from a pipe
tap : (British English) a piece of equipment for controlling the flow of water, gas etc from a pipe or container

Your English will never improve without daily practice.

週末に奈良への観光を予定しています。

唐招提寺では開山忌として鑑真和上坐像・御影堂障壁画の特別開扉が楽しみです。

Toshodai-ji (唐招提寺) is a Buddhist temple of the Ritsu sect(律宗) in the city of Nara, in Nara Prefecture, Japan. It was founded by a Chinese priest named Ganjin during the Nara period in the year 759 A.D.

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/7(水)

・soggy (ソギー) : びしょぬれの : unpleasantly wet and soft

LONGMANのWORD FOCUSより
・very wet: soaked, drenched
・a little wet: damp, moist
・wet and soft: soggy
・when the air feels wet: humid, damp, muggy

月曜日にsoakedとdampを習いました。昨日はsquishyなんてのも出てきました。
soakedもsoggyも「びしょぬれ」という訳でしたが、少し違うようですね。
辞書の例文を見ると、soakedは対象が人なのに対し、soggyはground, bread, cornflakes, sandwichesなどでした。今日のスキットではsocks。浸したようなニュアンスがあるのかな？

・I'd rather not eat out. : 外で食べたくないよ。

・OK, then. : それならいいわ。
・All right, then. : そういうことならそうしよう。

・See you in a half-hour or so. : 30分かそこらしたらまたね。

・now that I'm over my cold : 風邪が治ったから

・term paper : 学期末のレポート

・you can't take it back. : 撤回はできない。

It's so important to practice here and now.
「今ここで練習することがとても大切なのです。」

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/6(火)

・squishy : びしょびしょの
・break up : 解散する

Your daily effort is guaranteed to bear fruit.
「日々の努力は必ず実を結びます。」

・bear fruit : 実を結ぶ : to have a successful result

徹底トレーニング英会話 6/5(月)

・kitty-corner = catty-corner : 斜め向かいの : opposite and at a diagonal angle from sth/sb
・diagonal : 対角線の

・warn : 注意する、警告する

・I guess this just isn't my day. : 今日はついてないってことなんだな。

・yucky : きわめて不快な : disgusting or very unpleasant
・yuck : ゲェー(ひどい不快を表す) : exclamation (informal) used to show that you think sth is disgusting or unpleasant

・soaked : びしょぬれの : very wet [SYN] drenched
・get soaked with sweat : 汗だくになる
・perspire : 汗をかく : to produce sweat on your body [SYN] sweat

Practice speaking if you want to ウァーン(learn? earn?) to speak better.
「もっとうまく話せるようになりたいなら、話す練習をしましょう。」



・I'm sure you'll have a ball. 「きっと楽しめると思う。」
have a ballで楽しむという意味なんておもしろしですね。

・It's been nice talking to you. 「話せてよかったわ。楽しかった。」

・I wish I lived closer to work. 「職場のもっと近くに住んでたらな。」

・I just had them shined. 「磨いてもらったばかりだ。」

今日のディクテーションは、Let's Listen and Write!で、
(1) closer to workと書けませんでした。
(2) planeをtrainにしていました(笑)。思い込みは怖い。。

You'll never improve your English by making excuses.
「言い訳をしていても英語は上達しません。」

今日はLet's Read Out Loud!の日。
前にも書いたかもしれませんが、私は月～水のスキットよりも金曜日のモノローグの方が内容が好きです。
まるごと覚えたいですね。
今日だったら、(4) Relaxがいいかな。

You want to take the day off to relax?
Why shouldn't you?
You work too hard all the time.
We all need a break from time to time.
You'll be more energetic and efficient when you get back to work.

Day by day, your English is getting better and better.
「日を追うごとにあなたの英語はどんどんうまくなっているのです。」

挫折しかけていました。。
せっかく２ヶ月やってきたのだから、もう少し続けてみようと思います。
