勢い：Force

日本の慣用句には “たいへんな勢いで”という表現の例え方がいろいろあっておもしろいと思いませんか。以下にどのような勢いなのかまとめておきます。

There are Japanese idioms to express “with great force.” Below are a variety of similes to be interesting.

 

騎虎(きこ)の勢いで  with great force like riding on a tiger

獅子奮迅の勢いで   with great force like a vigorous lion

 cf. 獅子奮迅の働き　work with strenuous efforts

脱兎の勢いで 　with lightning speed like a hare in flight

飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いで  with great force like shooting a flying bird

 注）この場合 “with great force like shooting at a flying bird”とはしたくない！　前置詞 “at” をつけずに“実際に撃って落とすという勢い”を出したい。この用法は「Basis of English Grammar」でいずれまた勉強しましょう。

草木もなびく勢いで  with great force like bending even the plants and trees

破竹の勢いで　with irresistible force like a splitting bamboo

怒涛の勢いで　with great force like turbulent waves

怒髪天を衝く勢いでwith great anger with one’s hair stood on end into the sky

自然の勢いで　in the course of nature

酔った勢いで　under the influence (of alcohol)

勢いの波に乗る　ride a wave of momentum

勢いをつける、弾みをつける　give momentum (impetus) to

勢いがつく、弾みがつく、弾みに乗る、弾みを食う、余勢を駆る
