Moonfleet【J. Meade Falkner】
感想＞＞＞＞★★★☆☆
この『Moonfleet』はClassicってことなんですが、小説のタイトルも作者の『J. Meade Falkner』も初耳でした。
裏表紙には
『夜になると死者が通りを歩き、密輸入者が行動を開始する〜』って書いてあったんで、おどろおどろしい怪奇小説を想像してたんですが、そういう要素は元々原作にもなかったのか、それともリトールド（簡易化）されたときに割愛されたのかはわかりませんが、いたってごく普通の小説でした。
本文わずか24ページにリトールドされていますので、話を端折りすぎの感はありましたが、まあそこそこ面白かったです。
ラストはハッピー・エンドで読了感もよかったです。

Young John Trenchard lives with his aunt in the village of Moonfleet, in the south of England. His life changes when he finds a secret passage under the church. There is a room at the end of the passage, and in it are the coffins of the dead Mohune family. In one of those coffins is Blackbeard, a very bad man. Blackbeard can’t stay in his coffin. He gets out on dark winter nights and walks round the village. He is looking for his lost diamond.
Where is this famous diamond? Will John find it and be a rich man? Or will he lose his life in the dark and dangerous world of smugglers, a long way from Moonfleet and from Grace, his great love?
John Meade Falkner was born in England in 1858. His father worked for the church. Falkner was a teacher first and then went to Europe. When he came back to England, he worked in different jobs. But he was always interested in writing and books.
In 1894, he wrote a book about Oxford for visitors. One year later, he wrote his first story, The Lost Stradivarius (1895). He wrote two more books: Moonfleet (1898) and The Nebuly Coat (1903). Then he wrote a fourth story, but he left it on a train. He never saw it again!
Moonfleet is his most famous book. People of all ages loved this exciting story in Falkner’s time, and they love it today.’
