月面基地でも酸素つくれる。 米、探査再開へ鉱物観測

　米国が２０１８年に有人探査再開を計画している月の表面に、酸素の供給源になるチタン鉄鉱が広く分布している可能性があることが、米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）のハッブル宇宙望遠鏡の観測で１９日明らかになった。
　ＮＡＳＡは月面基地に宇宙飛行士を滞在させ、将来の火星探査への足掛かりとする計画。大気がない月で、飛行士の生命維持に欠かせず、ロケットの燃料にも使える酸素が調達できる利点は大きく、ＮＡＳＡはデータを詳細に分析するとしている。
　ハッブル望遠鏡は、反射の違いで月の表面の成分を見分けられる紫外線カメラなどで、１９７１年と７２年に月に着いたアポロ１５号、１７号のそれぞれの着陸地点と、これまで探査されたことがない直径約４２キロの「アリスターカス」というクレーター付近を観測。同クレーターと１７号の着陸地点で、チタン鉄鉱らしい鉱物分布を見つけた。（共同通信）


　そんなこと行っても分からなかったのに、望遠鏡で見つけられるのがすごいですね。いつか来るんでしょうか。人類が地球以外の星で暮らすなんてことが。
