MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Brunei's monarch, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan (head of state) Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, arrived in Manila Thursday afternoon for a three-day state visit.

The Sultan and his 78-member entourage arrived around 3:40 p.m. on board a Boeing 747 aircraft at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The sultan and his party were welcomed by Vice President Noli de Castro, incoming Presidential Management Staff chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Philippine Ambassador to the Brunei Virginia Benavides, Brunei Ambassador Malai Hajah Halimah binti Malai Yussof and Manila International Airport Authority general manager Alfonso Cusi.

Simple arrival rites were held at the NAIA’s Balagbag runway, where a red-carpet and an air force honor guard awaited the visitors. The Sultan was later led by Esperon and De Castro to a waiting limousine that left the airport around 3:55 pm.

A Malacañang statement said talks between the two leaders will include employment, peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), connectivity between Brunei and the Philippines (specifically Mindanao) and economic cooperation.
