蓮根……70g(小さめのを半本くらい)

ひき肉に材料A(塩、胡椒、ごま油、片栗粉、生姜のすりおろし)を入れてよく混ぜておく。

A essay about Otomo's work, "Freedom" and "Akira" part four

Although the extent of change was less than that of the other characters, Kaneda also changed in the movie. Even though Kaneda’s scene was only slightly defferent, it caused a big difference in the impression for the audience.
I felt that Kaneda changed too fast. He pulled his gun on Tetsuo too quickly.
He went to the trouble to rescue Tetsuo in the laboratory like as his protector, and next time they met, Kaneda fired a laser beam at Tetsuo without hesitation.
It was somehow weird that the gap between his protective feelings and his murderous intent was overly wide.
In the manga, he hesitated. He held the gun, but he couldn’t fire, Yamagata was killed by Tetsuo before his eyes and then he finally fired.
It was the same in the movie that he had murderous intent after Yamagata was killed. However, the audiences impression of Kaneda is different whether an episode like the above is shown or not.
Also, I read that Kaneda in the manga didn’t want to kill Tetsuo. Kaneda was saying he would kill Tetsuo and he seemed to imagine himself having the intension to kill. But, I think certainly what he wanted to do in fact was to hit Tetsuo, grab him by the collar and shout “What happened to you Tetsuo? /Why are you doing this? ”(どうしちまったんだ鉄雄オ!)
Also, I want to say one more thing about Tetsuo.
Both in the manga and in the anime, Tetsuo call Kaneda for help when he was metamorphosising.
In the movie, didn’t you think that it was really wishful thinking to call for help just after getting aggresive and behaving so outrageously? I thought so.
This is also another example of the impression for the audience being quite different although the event was basically the same.
During this same scene in the manga, my heart was touched when Tetsuo called out for Kaneda,. Just while Tetsuo's personality was blown away by his own power, a piece of his identity, which remained at the end, called out for Kaneda.
Showing the "dere" after staying "tsun" during five and a half volumes, I definitely regard this as the ultimate “tsundere!”

In the above, I described my dissatisfaction with the movie and the difference from the manga.
I'm sure you could understand that I love Akira and that’s the reason why I am so critical of the movie.
I like this manga so much. All of the elements of this manga are attractive.
The story, pictures, dialogue, gadgets, and especially characters are superb.
Not to mention the main characters like Kaneda and Tetsuo. Every suppoting character, like the colonel, lady Miyako, Kei, Kaori, Kai and Joker, are real and full of human-attraction.
Akira's story is grand.
It is an exciting Si-fi story in which psychic power, the government, army, the collapse of Neo-Tokyo and evolution of human beings develop to the limit of the screen and the page.
On this grand stage, however, the core of the story is a drama of Kaneda and Tetsuo.
It's an ultimate human drama in an extreme situation.

Akira Volume 2
Akira Volume 2

May I say the most unsatisfying point in movie?
It's that Tetsuo didn't look cool. As a Tetsuo fan, I couldn’t forgive this.
(Sorry to fans of the movie version of Tetsuo. You say that Tetsuo was cute and lovely. Probably you are tolerant and broad minded person. I’m not mature enough to approve of this a childish foolishness.)
Tetsuo in the movie was simplified so that it might be easy for the audience to understand. I can summarize the story about him in one sentence. “A weakling got psychic power suddenly, became elated, went berserk and brought on his own downfall in the end.” Such a character is not interesting because he is too stereotypical and simplified.
Tetsuo in the manga is a more complicated character, who has a vicious and dark attractiveness.
He is not the runt of the biker group, as he was in the movie. In the first volume, Kaneda said, “he is the scrum half in our biker gang” (In the English version, this dialogue was “He is the one of the best riders”) It shows that he was in an important position of the gang. He is not a typical “weakling.” His emotion toward Kaneda doesn’t seem merely an inferiority complex against the strong which the weak possess, but a sense of rivalry on even terms, mixed with pride and attachment. His emotion toward Kaneda was not blatant but expressed restrainedly. It was much more impressive than the movie.
This is moe! (Mr. Otomo, may I interpret that in the end of the fourth volume, the reason why Kaneda appeared was that Tetsuo called him? )
(I wrote before that many important things were explained in the manga, but not everything was explained with dialogue. Some events unfolded without dialogue and the readers had to interpret the story from the development of the events. “Kaneda’s appearance” was one such episode. What was shown in the story was that Tetsuo called Kaneda’s name for reasons unclear to the readers. At the same time Kaneda’s phantom appeared and when Tetsuo’s power was aroused, Kaneda (who seemed as if he had been dead) appeared with the buildings that were absorbed in the collapse of Tokyo.
I think at least it’s certain that Tetsuo’s power caused Kaneda’s appearance, but I’m not sure whether Tetsuo did it consciously or not. There is room for some interpretation by the readers.)

Then, in the movie, Akira had been dead and become a dissection specimen before the beginning of the story. Although I understand that this couldn't be avoided. If Akira was revived during the last 20 minutes of the story, the movie could not have finished in two hours.
However, I was disappointed.
I like Akira.
I especially liked the scenes of Akira with Tetsuo. They were very impressive. I think the most beautiful scene was the one in which Tetsuo came to Akira in the ruins of Tokyo in the 3rd volume.
Akira's personality had been blown away by his own power, he was always expressionless, but he showed a little human-like reaction only to Tetsuo. I liked the scenes that depicted communication between only two people like that so much
(To tell the truth, I can’t tell what was between Tetsuo and Akira even in the manga. This is also another episode which was not explained with words. It doesn’t seem to be a friendship, but they seem to understand each other somehow and it seems that there was a strange sense of solidarity.
Since there were little words during the scenes with them, the picture in those scenes are very powerful and beautiful as if Otomo devoted all his drawing power and skill to the pictures. I think that this is the reason why I liked the scenes of Akira with Tetsuo.)

I won't explain about the anime "Akira" now because it is too much of a famous anime.
If you don't know Akira, please read Wikipedia or reviews on Amazon.
I will write this essay on the assumption that the readers have watched the anime.
I hope that you read the manga also, but I think that most people outside Japan are less familiar with the manga than the anime. Also the English version of the manga is expensive and difficult to find.
Still, I recommend reading manga because the manga is so much more interesting than the anime version!
I felt certain of it while reading and watching again during the holidays.
To tell the truth, I don’t like the anime. Although I’m a big fan of Akira, or rather because I’m a big fan of Akira, I can’t rate the anime positively.
I know that the anime was a globally sucessfull and epoc-defining film, but I didn’t think the story was interesting.
I understand that it couldn’t be helped that the story was shortened for the anime
The manga has six volumes and the anime has only two hours. I understand that it must be impossible to show the entire original story in the movie..
However, even if I consider such a condition, I still think that the story in the movie was too rough.
The way the story develops was almost the same between the manga and the movie, until the point when Tetsuo arrived at Akira's place. In the manga, this was the story in the 2nd volume. The movie skipped the episodes of the remaining four volumes and suddenly reached the end.
In fact, the end of the story in the movie and in the manga was almost the same too.
Tetsuo's power becomes so strong as Akira to the point that he couldn't control it, he was metamorphosed by the power of himself, his power and Akira's power collided, the two of them became stars or a new universe or something else and they disappeared.
But the process to the end was completely different in the manga compared to the movie.
In the manga, Akira was alive and woken up, (In the movie, he had already become a dissection specimen.) he destroyed Tokyo once again, the Great Tokyo Empire rises, Lady Miyako and Kei and "Numbers" who had survived, tried to bury Akira using Tetsuo……
In this way, the story, which took four volumes in the manga, was drastically cut in the film.
It's reckless, isn't it?
What would you think if Snow White grew up quickly and the queen was jealous of her and next, Snow White married the prince?
Or, what would you think if Frodo left Shire, got to Rivendell and next, he threw the ring.
To skip the process spoils the story.
Also, before the audience gets a chance to find the story interesting or not, they must first understand at least the basics of the story. It is probable that those who have not read the manga would not be able to understand the story. In fact I’ve heard several people who’ve watched only the movie say that they couldn’t understand the story. I think that it’s a matter of course. In the movie, anything important wasn’t explained at all.
The largest factor of the difficulty of understanding was that Lady Miyako, who was one of the most important characters in manga, was merely a walk-on in the movie. She was a key person and only person who could explain about Akira, the project that created Akira and what was happening in the chain of events.
If Miyako doesn’t do it, another character should play the role in the movie, but nobody did. I dare to point out that it was a serious mistake of the adoptation.
(And then, there was also a monk from Tibet called Karma Tangi in the manga.
He made some important explanations too. I don’t think there was a scene in the movie that explained the reason why Tetsuo metamorphosed. In the manga, mentor Tangi explained it properly as shown in the panel. Many important dialogues had been cut, so the movie became incomprehensible.)

A essay about Otomo's work, "Freedom" and "Akira" part one

My photo diary for my Sapporo trip is not finished but my energy for writing fell a little bit because I’m in an entirely-otaku-mode. I will finish it if my energy returns.

What switched on my otaku-mode is this video that I found on Youtube.

FREEDOM登場編
As you can see, this is a TV-commercial for Nissin cup noodle. There were ten versions that were made and broadcasted from 2006 to 2008. Throughout the series, these commercials show one anime story. This promotional project was titled "FREEDOM project." As part of the project, the 7-part anime video DVD, titled “Freedom,” was released simultaneously.

(You can watch the trailers of the DVD on the official website FREEDOM-PROJECT.JP
I watched some parts of this commercial series on TV and they were very impressive. But I couldn't watch all of them. (Isn't it difficult to watch a commercial on TV that you actually want to see?)
Then I was able to watch them in their entirety on Youtube and I was attracted the anime. The movies really stimulated my otaku mind.
I also rented the DVD immediately.

I will explain the outline of the story.
The stage is set in the 23rd century, in a city named "Eden" on the moon's surface.
Civilization on the Earth was destroyed by a large disaster and war 160 years ago. Eden had been built by people who survived on the moon. For the sake of human beings surviving safely, the society of Eden was completely managed by the Eden Administration Bureau.
Eden was located on the far side of the Moon, so ordinary people couldn't see the earth. It was believed that it would be impossible to live on the earth even now.
One day, a boy whose name is Takeru and his friend, Kazuma found out a strange message when they went out of the city dome. Takeru thought that it was from the earth. He and Kazuma went to the near side of the moon in spite of the danger.
Takeru and Kazuma saw not a reddish earth (as people believed) but a beautiful blue earth.
They headed for the earth on a rocket while they were pursued by the Eden Administration Bureau because they had known the secret.

By the way, the characters in the story, Takeru and Kazuma, resemble Kaneda and Tetsuo, who are the characters who appeared in a manga that was adapted to the anime movie in 1988 entitled "Akira."
In fact, the character design of "Freedom" is by Katsuhiro Otomo who is the author of "Akira."
However, Otomo only worked on the character and mechanical design, not on the story, so it is improper to call "freedom” Otomo’s new work.
If you watch it as Otomo’s work you might be disappointed, because the story is simple, straight and kind of juvenile Si-Fi, not at all like his normal work.
Anyway, the characters are the children who still have genes from Otomo.
Although there are those who criticize Otomo as he made repeated use of the same characters from Akira, I think that it can't be helped that all his characters are alike since Otomo will always have a certain style.
It's enjoyable for me that it looks like Kanada and Tetsuo are playing in another world.
In that way, I enjoyed this "Freedom" series immensely.
I also found fan-sites of "Freedom." These sites were very interesting.
Most of these sites have content about Akira, which made me want to reread Akira.
So, I reread all volumes of that manga during Golden Week, and also watched the anime DVD.

Diary of the trip by myself in Sapporo

(This is my diary in spring. It took a little long time to upload.)

Preface
Some people around me seem to think that I like to travel because I went to the US for DuranDuran five years ago, I went to Uganda for Jica's study training the year before last and I've gone to many areas of Japan for conventions of art or music education every year.
However, in fact, I am a regular home body.
If I have something to do, I'll go out. But basically, I try not to come out from my room as much as possible.
So I had hardly done any sightseeing tours.
However, I was given a travel ticket this year because I had worked for 10 years and I had to use the ticket by the end of March. I thought that I could use it for my job or something. Had a convention been held at a far -off place, I should have used it, but this year's music and art convention was held in Tokyo.
Then I burst into JTB in a hurry at the end of February and decided to go to Sapporo in Hokkaido. In Hokkaido, Asahiyama Zoo is also good. I scheduled a three day trip to stay in Sapporo and go to Asahiyama Zoo.
Before the trip, I watched the movie "Story of Asahiyama Zoo." It was perfect preparation homework.

Diary of the trip by myself in Sapporo
March 28th, Sunday
I left Nakayama to Haneda Airport by the Keihin line via Yokohama. It took about one hour.
When I arrived at the airport, I noticed something terrible. My digital camera's battery case was empty. I took out the battery to charge and left it in my house.
3The reason why I made such a mistake is that I bought a new digital camera recently. The old digital camera's battery was built-in and it needn't have to be taken out.
This is a photograph that I took with my mobile phone. It was very hard to photograph. I was briefly determined to take photographs on my trip by mobile phone.
However, wait, there is Yodobashi camera or Bic camera in Sapporo too right?
Can't I buy the battery in those stores?
Instantly, I searched the internet with my phone for a volume-sales electrical appliance store and found a Yodobashi camera location by the side of Sapporo station.
I was at ease for a while, bought a box lunch at the gate shop, and got in the airplane. The airplane took off at 11:00am.
I had lunch on the plane. The box lunch was "Kuro-Inari." It was black Inari-zushi.
Inari-zushi is flavored boiled rice wrapped in fried bean curd. This black appearance is because "edible carbon" is used. There were three of inari. One was "Kikurage(Jew's-ear)& Hijiki(edible brown algae)", one was "kinpira (burdock root) & black sesame" and one was "black soybean." About the taste, they were ordinary Inari-zushi and had a normal but good taste.
The plane arrived at Shin-Chitose Airport at 12:35. I then got on JR line train.
This is a view from a the train window. It was truly snow country.
Although outside was snowy, it was warm the inside of a train. It was rather hot.

I arrived Sapporo station at 3:15. I then, went to Yodobashi camera and bought a battery and a charger. It's not bad to have two batteries because batteries are expendable supplies.
I got on the subway to Nakajima park station and took a photo with my digital camera in the train.
From Nakajima park station I walked to Art Hotels Sapporo where I stayed during the trip.
This hotel has a natural hot spring spa and guests can use the spa freely.

After checking in, got on the subway again and went to Odori station.
There was a shop called Kita-kitchen by the station. JTB gave me a 500 yen coupon for the shop, so I went to the shop to use it.
Kita-kitchen was a foods and goods shop from Hokkaido. Since the foods and goods were little bit expensive, I bought only a cut of cheese (530 yen) .
I walked along the subway passage east from Odori station and came outside.
It was really snowing.

Chitose-zuru museum was two block away from the subway exit.
Chitose-zuru is a sake brewery in Hokkaido.

TV drama "KOWAI"
This is a drama directed by Tutumi Yukihiko. Tutumi is the director who made the dramas "Keizoku" and "Trick" among others. I love his dramas very much.
Kowai is the second story in the book "Zoku-Kousetsu Hyakumonogatari." Basically, the main story is the same as in the novel, but there are some differences.
For example, Mataichi's nickname is "Komatakuguri(the swindler)" but Mataichi in the novel doesn't actually swindle people out of their money. His nickname is due to his gift of the tongue. Although he uses tricks or lies in order to perform his job perfectly, he never gets money by only telling lies.
On the other hand, in the drama Mataichi is an actual swindler. He tricks people to get money and he is also a thief.
tsutsu
Jihei is a homosexual and has a disease that makes him urinate frequently. It's a typical characteristic of Tsutsumi's dramas. He always adds some odd or strange things to them. Also, as in another episode, Mataichi has a tattoo which has not been finished. He tried to have some phrases from the sutra tattooed, but he couldn't get the full tattoo because it was too painful.
Although there are many differences, they are likable characters. Watabe Atsuro, who played Mataichi, and Osugi Ren, who played Jihei, are both very good actors. I love them very much. However, I also have some quarms about this particular Mataichi.
Firstly, in this drama he is very sexy-too sexy!. The scene where he was having a smoke was so sexy that I got giddy. I prefer him to be not so sexy.
Secondly, in this drama he is a strong fighter. He fought three men by himself and won. I prefer him to be not so strong. I prefer the Mataichi who doesn't have any physical strength and whose only weapon is his tongue.
Hukikoshi's Momosuke is perfect. Hukikosi Mitsuru plays Momosuke. He is very cute. He seems to be shy and little bit like an otaku, and I love this.
Koike Eiko plays Ogin. Although she seems to be little bit lacking in skill compared to the other actors, I thought she did good job. She is not just a pretty face.
I totally think this drama is great. It's not Kyogoku Natsuhiko's Kousetsu Hyakumonogatari original version but Tsutsumi's take on it, but it's important that a director interpret it his way.

TV drama "Kai"
This is a TV drama that was broadcasted on WOW WOW and directed by Sakai Nobuyuki. There are three stories from the Kosetsu series and a new story using the same characters and setting. Kyogoku Natsuhiko wrote the scripts for it himself.
Tanabe Seiichi played Mataichi and Sano Shiro played Momosuke. Sano Shiro is one of my favorite actors. Besides him, there are many good actors in this drama.
However, the story was awful. I couldn't believe that Kyogoku Natsuhiko wrote the script .
Firstly, Mataichi and his accomplices in this drama are assassins who kill many villans in revenge for somebody, some what like "Hissatsu Shigotonin." (Hissatsu Shigotonin is a famous drama in Japan. The story is of some assassins killing villans for revenge. I liked the drama, but I don't like this poor copy of it.) Also the way they kill people is absurd and foolish. Mataichi radiates a beam from his finger and Ogin use her puppet's tooth as a weapon. I couldn't help but laughing when I saw the scene although the scene was meant to be serious.
Secondly, although Tanabe Seiichi is good looking, his acting isn't very good. He speaks slowly, so he doesn't seem to be a "Komatakuguri" whose job was to solve problems using his gift of the tongue. Also, Toyama Kyoko, who plays Ogin, appears to have no particular skill.
I wonder if this drama is meant to be a joke by Kyogoku Natsuhiko and the director Sakai Nombuyuki.
Kyogoku appears in this drama as a "Kyogokutei", a popular writer, and there are also some writers who are his friends, Myabe Miyuki, Aramata Hiroshi and Mizuki Shigeru.
In addition to this, there are many gags in this drama. For example, Momosuke asks a publisher to publish his novel titled "Ubume-no-natsu (Summer of Ubume)" and is refused. The title was the same as the first novel by Kyogoku Natsuhiko. In the fourth story, a man whose name is Tyuzenji and whose job is an exorcist appears and challenges Mataichi. He is a character from the Kyogokudo series.
I would have loved the jokes and gags very much, if only if it didn't harm the quality of the story.
kai-English

I think, if you regard it as just a comedy, you might be able to enjoy it.
Tani Kei who plays Jihei, and Hino Shohei who plays Tokujiro, are both good in it. They are veterans. Momosuke, whom Sano Shiro plays, is not bad though the character is different from the one in the novel. Momosuke in this drama is not a person with emotional troubles. He doesn't consider himself a "good for nothing" and is strong as Mataichi. Mataichi and Momosuke are very friendly and they don't seem to have any problem with their difference in class status (although it was an important theme in the novel.)
You can see them relaxing and taking it easy. The most important thing is not to take the story too seriously.

Warau(laughing) Iemon (1997)
This is a book by Kyogoku Natsuhiko. It's from his series of rewritten traditional Japanese stories.
"Warau Iemon" is the written version of "Yotsuya Kaidan".

Yotsuya Kaidan is the most famous Japanese ghost story and was written in 1825 by Tsuruya Nanboku IV as a kabuki play. The original title was "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan."
It's a tale of betrayal, murder and ghostly revenge.

Iemon, a samurai from Enya-han (塩治藩Enya-fief) ,and Oiwa, a daughter of the Tamiya family, were a married couple. Although Iemon had been passionate with her before they got married, he became tired of her because she was weak due to illness.
Oume, a granddaughter of a well-to-do neighbor called Itou Kihei, was in love with Iemon. Oume and Kihei poisoned Oiwa disguising it as medicine. However the poison did not kill her, but instead disfigured her, causing her hair to fall out and her left eye to droop. Seeing Oiwa's disfigurement, Iemon began to hate her and he was lured toward the Itou family's wealth and young Oume. Iemon and Kihei conspired to kill Oiwa.
Iemon killed Oiwa and flung her body into a nearby river.
Iemon planned his new marriage. On his wedding day to his new bride Oume, Iemon lifted her veil to find Oiwa's disfigured face. Horrified, he thinks it's a ghost and beheads her and discovers that he has in fact killed Oume. He also killed Kihei mistaking him as the ghost too.
After that, everywhere he goes, he sees the disfigured face. Oiwa's ghost manages to kill all of the conspirators with Iemon. In the end, Iemon gets killed by his brother-in-law whom he had betrayed before.

This is the original story "Yotsuya Kaidan" by Tsuruya Nanboku.
There is a Japanese word "Iroaku(色悪)." It's one of the kabuki terms which means a villain who has a handsome face.
Iemon is typical "Iroaku." If you refer to the word in the dictionary, you will find that Iemon is written as an example in the difinition of Iroaku.

Nochino Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari(2003)

This book is the third book of the Kousetsu series. It's the 130th Naoki Prize winner.

The story is set 40 or 50 years after the 1st and 2nd books.
Japan opened up to the world. The Tokugawa shognate was overthrown and the Meiji government began. Edo was renamed Tokyo and became the capital of Japan. The wave of modernization swept over the whole of the country. The class system in the Edo period was abolished and the samurai disappeared. Everything was changing rapidly.

Yojiro, who was previously a samurai in the fief of Kitabayasi is working for an import company. Kennosin, Shoma and Soubei are his friends.
They always talki, discuss and quarrel about things.
For example, was it true that divine punishment had actually sunk an island? What is the will-o-the-wisp? Is it possible that a snake can stay alive for 40 years?
They could never agree so they visited an old man in Yagenbori.

Yamaoka Momosuke, who is a riddler, met a man called Mataichi when he was traveling in Echigo (present-days Nigata) during a particular incident.
Mataichi's ostensible job is an Ongyo, which is a wondering monk who begs for money while scattering paper talisman, but his true job is to solve complex problems using his gift of the tongue and tricking people. Traveling with him after the incident, Momosuke was quite charmed by his personality.
After coming back to Edo, Momosuke was asked by his brother Gumpachiro for his opinion on something. Gunpachiro is a dosin in Hachioji. Dosins were samurai-like policemen in the Edo period. He was having trouble with a strange murder case that he was working on.
It was very a strange murder which couldn't have been committed by a person. Momosuke visits Mataichi in Kojimachi and asks him for his advice.

Kousetsu is a rumor which people believe.
Hyaku Monogatari means one hundred stories.

It is set in the Edo period.
Momosuke is a Kangae-mono writer(→※1) . One day, he came across some strange people when he stopped at a small shack to take shelter from the rain.
There were some men and a woman in the shack. They too were taking cover from the rain.
One of them, a man who looks like an Ongyo--- Ongyo is a person who wears Buddhist monk's clothes and begs for money while scattering paper talisman. --- suggests to play "Hyaku Monogatari" to kill time.
Hyaku Monogatari means one hundred stories. It is a game which was popular in Japan during the Edo-period. People in a room have to tell one hundred mystery, strange, ghost or monster stories. It was said that something mysterious would happen when all the stories were finished.
Momosuke was happy to hear the suggestion because he really loves mysterious ghost or monster stories, and he frequently traveled around Japan to collect them.
The woman began to tell her story. It was a story about a monster cat. She said that her sister, whose name was Oriku, met with the monster cat the day before her wedding and subsequently became mad and died. Momosuke knows many monster stories, but this was the first time he had heard it.

The Kobe trip during the last new year holiday (part five)

There is a Sakura-masamune sake shop on the floor under the restaurant.
We sampled some sake while talking with the shop staff.
He said that Sakura-masamune's sake is a purveyor to the Imperial family. The sake is offered at the Imperial garden party in spring. Also he said that the one for autumn is Kiku-masamune. Sakura(cherry blossoms) is spring flower and Kiku(chrysanthemum) is autumn flower. It's like a good tale, isn't it?
We left Sakura-masamune and went to Kiku-masamune commemoration hall.

There is a very good exhibition explaining the process of brewing, but we we looked at it five years ago, so we skipped this time.
We visited only a section for sake-tasting. We could sample unpasteurized sake and ume-shu.
Next was Sawanotsuru museum.
I bought a grass of Daiginjo Mineme-no-ura
The bottle on the right is "shunko" 30000yen. I wished I could by it.
The last place was Kobe-Shushinkan.
This brewery makes sake called Fukuju

We sampled many kinds of sake. They were selling sake by measure. I bought a bottle of Dunmai-ginjo (meaning careful distillation of pure rice)
There was a restaurant and a sake bar too. I'd like to try the restaurant the next time.
This is English website of Shushinkan.
http://www.enjoyfukuju.com/english/our_brewery/index.html

Since it was time to go back came and we left for Rokkou-michi station.
We said good bye at the station and the short trip in Kobe ended. The trip was rich with experience was much enriched trip even though it was only two days. Thank you Yuki!

After going back to my patents home, my parents and I drank the sakes which I bought at the breweries with Osechi.
Osechi is traditional Japanese food for the new year celebration. I think that sake is the best alcohol to have with Japanese food. All of them were very good!

The Kobe trip during the last new year holiday (part four)

The next day was a day to drink. It was because the second day's plan was to tour Sake cellars in Nada.
Nada is an area along the shore of southeastern Kobe. This area is famous as the largest sake producing region in Japan since the old days. Many sake breweries stand in a row. You can visit Sake breweries and Sake museums which were created by major brewing companies.
I'm a little fastidious about Sake. If it ever has any smell of bran, I don't want to drink it. I had been convinced that I could not drink sake when I was young because I was able to buy only cheap sake those days. After getting to know nice sake, I started to like it.
When I came to Kobe five years ago, I visited two places, 浜福鶴Hamahukutsuru Brewery and 菊正宗 Kikumasamune Brewery. I especially liked Hamahukutsuru.
However, this time, some breweries had already been closed because of the new year's holiday and so had Hamahukutsuru. So we visited other place that were still open.
Firstly, we went to Uosaki station by the Hanshin line, and walked around the brewery area. On the way, there was a tofu maker.
I bought some ganmodoki(fried tofu balls mixed with vegetables) as a souvenir for my parents. The lady of the store gave thick deep-fried tofu as a free gift.
Takinokoi kuramoto club and Museum of Hakutsuru sake brewing company were closed.
I only took pictures of them.
Nada's Sake breweries are divided into five go (郷 villages). The upper right photograph is a sign in which the Uosaki go and Saigo go are shown.
tank
There were many huge tanks on site at the breweries.
"It's great that the all of those tanks are filled with sake," said my friend thoughtfully, showing her quiet enthusiasm for drinking.
Then she said, "sake was pumped directly out from some tanks, when there was the great Hanshin (Kobe and Osaka) earthquake."
At that time, Kobe was extensively damaged. The houses and buildings around this area also collapsed and people's spirits were very low. Then the staff of the brewing company pumped sake out of the tanks and handed out it to the people around the area. It is a heart warming story.
We arrived at Sakura-Masamune commemoration hall.
This hall has a restaurant called "Sakura-en 桜宴."
We had lunch there.

We ordered sake with lunch (of course).
The left one is "Shuki 朱稀."The label says in Japanese, "from distillation by association with the first yeast
The right one is Daiginjo 大吟醸. Daiginjo is a top quality sake brewed at low temperatures from rice grains milled to 50% or less of their original weight.
Both of them are sold only in this restaurant.
Usually, the alcohol content of sake is about 14%, but these sakes have 17% because they are unrefined. The proof of unrefined sake is high.
花篭
This is the "Hanakago 花篭, lunch " 1580yen. Shiraae白和え(salad with tofu), Otsukuri-sanshu-moriお造り三種盛り(3 sorts of sashimi), Ebi-to-Yubano-aemono海老と湯葉の揚げ物(deep-fried Soy Milk Skin and shrimps), Sanshoku-temari-zushi三色手まり寿司(three pieces of ball shaped sushi) and 抹茶プリン(green tea pudding).
All of the dishes were delicate tasting and delicious.

(Contidued to part five)
