インデアンカレーを食べたら・・・。

インディアンカレー出張食い倒れ日記のやまけんから、じつにおいしそうなこのカレーの話を聞いた。
こんな具合だ。
「山田さんって、胸にプレートをつけた人が、カッカッカッて杓文字でごはんを切ってる。ぼくがルー大盛りご飯大盛りで頼むとその山田さんが皿にごはんを盛る。カッカッカッは、ごはんに空気を入れてたんですね。で、カレーをお玉で救い上げて（手首を曲げるしぐさをしながら）、一瞬の小手返しですよ。何が起きたか全然見えない」
さて、ここまでやまけんは、カレーの味に触れてない。確か私はその後「味」についても聞いたはずだが覚えてない。「甘さが最初にきて、それからカーッと辛さがくる」といった感じだったが、味も何も、カレーが入れられるまでの描写につきている。で、長い長い旅をすることになった。
「インデアンカレーって、食べたことあるか」「あるで」「おいしかった」「・・・んー、そやな、特においしいっちゅうことは」と微妙な答えをしたのは道頓堀、伊集院静さんが小説にもしたぼったくり酒場チルドレンのユウコママだ。「うめだの地下にあるっていうから明日行こうと思うんだけど」「あんたどこ泊まっとんねん。日航ホテルやろ、そやったらうめだまで行かんでも、長堀通りにあるよ」「長堀？　それはどう行くの？」「長堀は長堀や、御堂筋線の地下から、ほれ」
いつものように「ほれ」で終わった。次の朝二日酔いでチェックアウトタイムぎりぎりに目覚めた私は、腹をすかしていつもの習慣で日航ホテル地下にある竹葉亭へはいってしまった。はじめ、朝日新聞で仕事していた頃良く行った東銀座の竹葉亭が、大阪にもあると懐かしくて行ったのだが、東京よりもこれがイイ。昼の会席をゆっくり時間をかけていただき、茶などすすっていると、昨夜の悪夢の乱交で壊れた体力がすーっと引いていくようなやさしさがある。ひとりホテルでもらった新聞のライブドア対フジテレビ記事を読んでいると、隣のテーブルへ、ラフなオッサンふたりがやってきた。「あの○○（ホテル）は、食うもんないんやから、竹葉亭だすように言うといてえな」と注文をつけたオッサンは、返す刀で「でも、あの堀ちゅうのはおもろいな。ホリエモンちゅうネーミングがすごいわ」と、たしなめるように年配風の連れおっちゃんが「いや、あれは駆け引きっちゅうのがおもろいということはあるけどな」「いや、ホリエモンはすごいで、あの名前がおもろい。誰が付けたんやろ？」。「それは、堀江さんの馬の名前ですよ」と、さっき食べたウナギとともにのど元まででかかりそうになる私。それにしても、ライブドアがリーマンと交わした株式を預けるという契約は、首を絞める結果にならなければ、と思いつつ席を立って、御堂筋線に乗ろうと改札へむかった瞬間、長堀インディアンカレーを思い出した。御堂筋線心斎橋駅改札近くにコーヒースタンドがある。カギ作ります、かなんだかのさびれた一角に、さらに風景をどんよりさせるようにカウンターだけの店があるのだが、ドトールやスターバックが全盛の時代に、かえってまずいコーヒーをだすこんな店が私の好みになっている。いつものおばちゃんが金髪の兄ちゃんに説教している。「とにかくいろんな人が来るんやから、使ったモノはもとのとこにもどす、これだけはやってよ」と、きつく教えながら、私の前に水と灰皿を置く。「これだけは、やってよ」では止まらず「水はこんなもんや、いっぱい人が来るんやから氷入れて（水差しを左手に持って並べたコップ群1４個に水を満たして）、こんなもんでええか、水用意しといてな」「アイスコーヒー」と私が注文しても、こっちには眼もくれず、「アイスコーヒーはこうな」と新人金髪君に教えながら、私にコップを差し出す。「いっぺんにいろいろ言うても、覚えられへんとおもうけど」と言いながら彼女は今度は冷蔵庫を開ける。「ホットケーキミックスが３袋、な。これは確認しといて」「あのー、長堀通りというのはどっちになるんでしょうね？」「ああ、長堀、そこから後ろに階段が見えますやろ、その横をずっとあがっていって横に地下街がありますから」そう答え、再び新人金髪君へ、無限に続くとも思える駅コーヒーの極意を伝授し始めたおばさんを背に、私は長堀インデアンカレーをめざした。トルルルー。ここで親切にもインデアンカレーの盟友F岡が長堀インデアンの場所を携帯で知らせてくれる。で、コーヒーショップおばさんの教え通りに地下街を進んでいくと地上の商店街へでた。大阪の西も東も右も左もわからない混沌の商店街だ。駅前「NOVA」に飛び込んで「長堀はどっちですか？」「ああ、そこまっすぐつぎの信号が長堀通りですよ」と。その方向を見ると、信号は無限の彼方のようであり、重い荷物に腰を痛めている私はもう無理、と、どうせなら本家うめだインディアンカレーをめざすことにした。思い込みはおそろしいもので、御堂筋線梅田駅のホームで電車のドアが開いた瞬間、カレーのにおいがただよってきた気がした。そんなことはあり得ない。なんば駅阪急方面出口をでて、しばらくすすんだところにカレー屋はあったが、相当な距離がある。しかし、それにしてもなんという地下街！　「阪急」方面を手がかりにすすんで行くが、進めば進むほど地下街は、蜘蛛の巣状に広がっていくような気がしてくる。立ち飲みがある。串カツの店で、まだ真っ昼間なのにコップ酒でしあげにかかっているオヤジたちがいる。無数のトンカツやがある。もちろんカレーやうどんもある。こんな場所でたった一軒のカレー屋をどうやって探せばいいというのか。途方に暮れていると、宝くじ売り場の横に案内所があった。わかるはずものないと高をくくって制服のお姉さんに尋ねる。「あのー、インデアンカレーはどっちかわかります」「阪急三番街ですその通りをまっすぐ行って・・」。まっすぐと言ってそれですまなかった。ともかく阪急三番街へたどりつくと、地図に載っていた。またもや食い倒れの店店をすすんで、大きなインデアン（印度人）の顔にであった時は、とうとう来たかのうれしさがこみあげてきた。レジで７２０円はらって札をもらいカウンターにつくと目の前に「山田さん」がいた。想像とはぜんぜん違っていた。気難しいオヤジだとばっかり思っていた山田さんはマジな顔つきだが歳の頃で30。いや、もっと若いかもしれない。その山田さんが電気ジャーの中のゴハンを確かにカッカッカッと混ぜている。そして、アーモンド型に整形されたゴハンにとろっとしたルーのかかった皿を、客が黙々と食べている。大阪では客もまた職人なのだ。席に着いた私の前にすっとスプーンが置かれる。カレー色でインディアンの顔が描かれたナプキンの上に置かれたスプーンは寸分狂いもなく垂直である。山田さんがゴハンを整形する。やまけんが言ったように空気をいれている感じで、楕円の皿と同じように整形する。そして寸胴へ向かい手首を曲げてルーを掬うとゴハンにスーッとかけた。スナップを利かせた独特のフォームである。そのカレーが運ばれそばに小皿で酢キャベツが置かれた。創業５０年というこの店は「辛さ」の反対が「すっぱさ」であることを熟知している。カレーの付け合わせは「酢」だ。運ばれたカレーをなんと表現していいか。甘い。甘すぎるように私の舌には感じた。だが、つぎの瞬間燃えた。大阪のカレー屋はまだ３度目くらいだが、これほど辛いのははじめてだ。常道ではここで水に手を伸ばしてはいけないのだが、さっきの竹葉亭の昼飯と地下街を長く歩いた疲れで、すぐ水を半分いってしまった。すると、あっという間にそのコップの水がもとにもどった。水差しの口が置かれたままのコップにぴゅっと飛んできて、ぴたりと水をつご足した。その人物のプレートを見ると「菅野」とあった。山田さんのメシ盛りルー掛けに加えて菅野さんの「水つぎ」にも刮目せねばなるまい。次回は「ルー大盛りにしよう」と後悔しながらふと思った。この店の店員はなぜこれほど職人技に長けているのか。すぐにわかった。この忙しい。つぎからつぎへ客がなだれこんでくる店で１日１０００回も彼らはメシを盛り、水を注ぐだろう。１週間も働けば、メシの一粒、水の一滴も狂わぬよう正確になるだろう。労働とはなんと素晴らしいものか。なんと、誇らしいものか。２回も昼飯を食べた私は、爛れた洋梨になって店を出、梅田駅までもどれるかどうか考えた。無理かも。すると阪急電車の乗り場が近くに見えた。まあ、なんとか阪急からでも新大阪へ行けるのではないか、と大雑把に考えた私はエスカレーターに乗った。阪急乗り場はすばらしい大きな吹き抜けだった。インディアンカレーの上には大聖堂があったのだ。こんなバカな話をして大阪の人には怒られると思うが、阪急駅のすぐ隣が大阪駅だった。大阪駅へ進むとまた地獄のような食い倒れ横町にであった。小気味いいことに大阪では官たるJR大阪駅より、民の阪急の方が立派だ。しかしJR大阪駅もまた負けていない。人の流れは通路下駅改札なのだが、右側の通路に「中央きっぷ売り場」とある。それなら新幹線に乗る私はこっちだろうと２階通路を選んだらこれが罠だった。またもや行けども行けども飲食店。で、やっと「切符売り場」方面の表示板に出会って、そちらへ行くとなんと、それは1階へ降りる薄汚れた階段でしかない。「中央きっぷ売り場」の表示そのものが客寄せの引っかけだったのだ。ひどいのか、温かいのか、人間が濃いのか。これが大阪だ。インデアンの教訓だった。
