Well, this is one of the best books of 2008! (*゚∀゚)っI wasn't expecting much when i began to read this novel, and once i began i was eager to find out how the unlikely relationship would conclude. I wasn't disappointed! Normally when the pair are unlikely partners, it's usually very cliché-ish, but the way this story was headed it turned out much better than was expected!
(*゚▽゚*)
No only did Mrs. Hoyt choose different names for her characters, she made them vastly different than typical characters in historical romance stories.
Now, on to the review! φ(.. )
Melisande is the daughter of a deceased earl, and has always pinned for Jasper, the hardened ex-military man who's entire regiment but him and 3 people, were massacred. She decides to marry him after seeing that 2 of his fiancée's leave him at the altar (literally) and thinks that she finally got the once in a lifetime opportunity she's always wished for. Now, why would she suddenly love such a character as Jasper? Well, it all began at a ball (typical...) in which she didn't want to be at, when she noticed him flirting with beautiful women and whispering in their ear. She decided she hated him just like that, when by chance she was leaving to get some fresh air, she heard Jasper comforting one of his crying friends, knowing the pain he was feeling at the time. Since then she began to see him in a different way and how he concealed his true self to the rest of the world, coming off as a silly person.
When they were finally married, it was obvious that Jasper was going to treat his wife with difference and continue his life just as he always has. He had never noticed her before because she hid her true self from the world (and still does) and is thus perceived as a shy woman with nothing special about her, or so he thinks at first. But once he gets to know his wife better, things begin to change between them. At the beginning, when Jasper wanted to know what sort of person was his wife, he found a old snuff box (which by the way is my favorite part of the story) filled with meaningless little things (or so he thinks) and finds one of his buttons in the little box. Unable to ask her without seeming like and intruder, he remains silent. However, as he is uncovering the secret of the 28th Regiment's massacre, he has become closer to his wife (and a terrier named Sir Mouse....) but along with that, so has a murderer, especially when Jasper asks Melisande to accompany him to Scotland to see a man who might know something about the massacre (he will appear in To Beguile a Beast in May 2009, look for it!(ノ`Д´)ノ) But en route to his aunt's home (who happens to live near Alastair's recluse castle, the man they're searching for) a murder attempt occurs, in which Jasper had to use the hated gun in order for him to save the people traveling with him. That's when he discovers that he doesn't want to lose his dear wife who has come to mean too much for him.
Melisande has also come to learn more about her husband, one being that he is still haunted by the deaths of his fellow comrades, and that because of the war in Quebec, he no longer feels safe sleeping in his own bed, but rather in the corners of the sleeping room. Melisande understands this and supports him rather than scoff at him, she joins him in the corner of the room.
This is such a touching novel, fast-paced and fun to read, i couldn't put it down! Seriously, the ending was MUCH sweeter than other romances that i've read before. The tin box! The tin box!! such a beautiful ending! Sigh....(*´ェ`*) maybe i shouldn't spoil the ending..... it's very rewarding, and i would ruin the whole book anyways (not that i already did.... but summarized it...)
□■*:;;;:*□■*:;;;:*■ Take a look at it when you get the chance. It's a worthy series! They're The Legend of the Four Soldiers..。o○o。.★.。o○o。.☆

Setting: England 1877, Russia 1707

SEQUEL TO: Midnight Angel

I was looking forward to buying and reading this book!! I've read the reviews, and many of them were not so good about it(ρ゚∩゚) グスン, and i thought, "how can a Lisa Kleypas book be that bad? It's unheard of!"「(゚ペ) エットォ… Apparently, what i read stuck in my mind the entire time, and when i finally got hold of a book, i couldn't read it properly! The words, "it could have been better if she didn't..... did he truly love her or.....?"ャダヽ(o`皿′o)ノ I shall tell you why. Nikolas is the typical brooding hero of the story (and was the anti-hero in the previous book in which he was portrayed as the enemy) but his past is sordid. His mother practically abandoned him and his younger brother to a nursemaid when he was born and his father abused both of his children, but more to Mikhail since he couldn't defend himself and was the weakest. Afterwards, when his father died, Nikolas' brother began having relationships with men rather than women, and one of the guys he had relationships with was one of the tzar's trusted men who worked for him. When Mikhail broke off the relationship, the man wanted revenge and killed Mikhail. Nikolas heard about it and killed the man personally, which caused his exile. When he meets Emma's family through Tasia (Emma's stepmother) he goes after Emma without her noticing it, until it's too late. Sounds intriguing? Well wait till you read the rest of my review!
Apparently Nikolas is the one who has been threatening and blackmailing Emma's suitors, and because of that, Emma believes it's her fault that no one finds her attractive enough to marry her. That is, until she meets Adam Milbank, an impoverished lord who is known more as a fortune hunter. Emma believes herself in love with him and both decide that they should confront her father and allow them to marry. This is were the story actually begins and were Nikolas is shown to have plans for Emma. Eventually Nikolas convinces Emma to marry him and he tells her father that no matter what he says, Emma will marry him, not because he told her to, but because she wishes to defy her father (who she believes is the one who keeps sending away all her suitors... when in fact we know it's Nikolas). The rest disappointed me because Nikolas was supposed to have some deep affection towards Emma if he went as far as sending her suitors running (in my point of view) and after they're officially married, he treats her with indifference, but Mrs. Kleypas says that the reason why he kept a cold demeanor towards his wife was because he felt that if he gave her all of his heart or showed her any affection, that she would use it against him (which she uses anyways by making him jealous, only she does it for the opposite reason; so that he can love her.) As the book unfolds, we become aware of the fact that when Nikolas moved to England he brought along old relics from his ancestors, and they uncover a painting of his great-great-grandfather who ironically has the same looks and same facial features, not to mention the same name to top it all off. Nikolas faints when he sees the painting and goes back to 1707in the time of his ancestor. To make things shorter, he meets Emelia, but he believes her to be his wife, only it's his great-great-grandmother who he marries (which she is Emma's past form a century ago). He is still the old Nikolas, but he is in the world were they didn't have the same things as they did in the late 1800's. To be honest with you guys, i sort of skimmed through the part in which Nikolas gets to know and love her more Σ('◇'*)エェッ!?. I then skipped to the interesting part, in which Nikolas and his wife are believed to be traitors (you'd have to read the book to see why.) This is when he realizes that this is where his ancestor died by making sure his wife and unborn child are unharmed and safe from the clutches of Tzar Peter the Great. When he dies in a cell he comes back to the present and changes completely his attitude towards Emma (he also thinks her to be Emelia) which leaves me wondering, does he truly love her or Emelia? So, through the rest of the book he spends his time trying to convince her to love him back.ζ~(∂_∂)~ζ Typical...

A good book, but for some reason it felt incomplete... maybe if Mrs. Kleypas took off the part were Nikolas goes back in time and adds more to the situation between Emma and Nikolas, it might have been better too,(now i get why the though "it might have been better if..." was stuck in my head!(゚ロ゚;)エェッ!?) because when i got to the part in which he goes back it time, i felt as if i never read the book at the beginning, as if i was re-reading what happened before and had to read it again how he met Emelia and what not. So i left it in pause for some days and resumed reading it just a week ago. This was another Kleypas novel that left me unsatisfied with the story... (the other was A Wallflower Christmas which she made it all cliché from her previous stories, not good at all (,,#゚Д゚):∴;'・,;`:ゴルァ!!... though i prefer Prince of Dreams than Wallflower Christmas any time!)It's probably that i dislike the fact that the ladies in her story band together and act completely UNladylike So if you'd like to obtain this book as an ebook for free, i will send along a link if you feel interested despite the fact that i ruined it for you.... maybe i shall have to write "Spoiler Alert!" for those who have some books as their wish list.

PS. Maybe i should stick with doing the CHARACTER INFORMATION part in all the reviews i make since it makes it easier to know what these characters are like before they read what my review is going to be about. Makes things easier on me too!八(^□^*)

2009年01月29日12:48

Well, i'm sure this isn't a book review, but what the hell?(*・ω・)ノ I wanted to write about Gackt's new release GHOST, which was one of the songs i was actually looking forward to listening!v( ̄∇ ̄)v (I didn't really love the single JESUS which came out in November... or December of 2008)and the first time that i heard GHOST in Gackt's official website, i LOVED IT immediately and was anxious for it to come out(屮゚Д゚)屮 カモーン. When i got it the same day the Gackt Dears received their copy i was super happy , that i made a video of it and posted it in Youtube.....。゚+.(・∀・)゚+.゚ i wasn't expecting the first day to have 300 and something views... heck, i wasn't expecting views AT ALL! and I felt that i've finally did something people are looking for. I sent quite a few emails to people who requested the mp3 early (and some even sent some to me yesterday... a day before the worldwide release of Ghost came out.... i was thinking, "really, they waited this long, they might as well wait one more day for it!"(-ε-)ブーブー but it wasn't kind of me so i just gave it to them. I did ask them to send me their info if they wanted the mp3 i shouldn't complain!( -д-)ノ) At any rate, i got some messages that said, "can you send me the Ghost mp3 please? thank you ... blah blah..." and they neglected to give me their emails so that i may send it to them.... silly,(゚д゚)、ペッ they must have been pretty exited to have it that they forgot the most important thing in the universe.(゚∇゚ ;)エッ!? Well. I suppose that is all for today, i wonder how many home made MV's the public is going to make when it comes out.... i'm scared to see.....(i sort of did one too, only i used pictures of Gackt and nothing else as you will see if you click my movie, and what's more, i got it off before the GHOST song was released for non-Dear members.)
I shall send along a download link to the Ghost album along with the video i made in case you don't feel like going on Youtube at the moment....(≧ヘ≦) ムゥ

(And why do i bother again?(≧ヘ≦) ムゥ haha, nobody reads my stuff so i'm probably wasting my time...。゜゜(´□`。)°゜。. whatever, i like writing. ) ENJOY!!!φ(.. )~ ダウンロード・リンク こちら
