Well, this is one of the best books of 2008! (*゚∀゚)っI wasn't expecting much when i began to read this novel, and once i began i was eager to find out how the unlikely relationship would conclude. I wasn't disappointed! Normally when the pair are unlikely partners, it's usually very cliché-ish, but the way this story was headed it turned out much better than was expected!

No only did Mrs. Hoyt choose different names for her characters, she made them vastly different than typical characters in historical romance stories.
Now, on to the review! φ(.. )
Melisande is the daughter of a deceased earl, and has always pinned for Jasper, the hardened ex-military man who's entire regiment but him and 3 people, were massacred. She decides to marry him after seeing that 2 of his fiancée's leave him at the altar (literally) and thinks that she finally got the once in a lifetime opportunity she's always wished for. Now, why would she suddenly love such a character as Jasper? Well, it all began at a ball (typical...) in which she didn't want to be at, when she noticed him flirting with beautiful women and whispering in their ear. She decided she hated him just like that, when by chance she was leaving to get some fresh air, she heard Jasper comforting one of his crying friends, knowing the pain he was feeling at the time. Since then she began to see him in a different way and how he concealed his true self to the rest of the world, coming off as a silly person.
When they were finally married, it was obvious that Jasper was going to treat his wife with difference and continue his life just as he always has. He had never noticed her before because she hid her true self from the world (and still does) and is thus perceived as a shy woman with nothing special about her, or so he thinks at first. But once he gets to know his wife better, things begin to change between them. At the beginning, when Jasper wanted to know what sort of person was his wife, he found a old snuff box (which by the way is my favorite part of the story) filled with meaningless little things (or so he thinks) and finds one of his buttons in the little box. Unable to ask her without seeming like and intruder, he remains silent. However, as he is uncovering the secret of the 28th Regiment's massacre, he has become closer to his wife (and a terrier named Sir Mouse....) but along with that, so has a murderer, especially when Jasper asks Melisande to accompany him to Scotland to see a man who might know something about the massacre (he will appear in To Beguile a Beast in May 2009, look for it!(ノ`Д´)ノ) But en route to his aunt's home (who happens to live near Alastair's recluse castle, the man they're searching for) a murder attempt occurs, in which Jasper had to use the hated gun in order for him to save the people traveling with him. That's when he discovers that he doesn't want to lose his dear wife who has come to mean too much for him.
Melisande has also come to learn more about her husband, one being that he is still haunted by the deaths of his fellow comrades, and that because of the war in Quebec, he no longer feels safe sleeping in his own bed, but rather in the corners of the sleeping room. Melisande understands this and supports him rather than scoff at him, she joins him in the corner of the room.
This is such a touching novel, fast-paced and fun to read, i couldn't put it down! Seriously, the ending was MUCH sweeter than other romances that i've read before. The tin box! The tin box!! such a beautiful ending! Sigh....(*´ェ`*) maybe i shouldn't spoil the ending..... it's very rewarding, and i would ruin the whole book anyways (not that i already did.... but summarized it...)
□■*:;;;:*□■*:;;;:*■ Take a look at it when you get the chance. It's a worthy series! They're The Legend of the Four Soldiers..。o○o。.★.。o○o。.☆
