Radiation Leakage of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Feared Can Exceed Chernobyl DisasterTokyo, Japan, April 12, 2011 /WNCNews/ – Fukushima nuclear power plant operator, Tokyo Electric and Power (TEPCO) in Japan worried if eventually radiation leakage can exceed the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 ago.
¡ÈRadiation leakage has not stopped completely and our concern is that it could eventually exceed Chernobyl,¡É said an official from TEPCO on the reporters as quoted by Reuters news agency on Tuesday (4/12).
Japanese nuclear authorities today increased the level of the nuclear crisis to a level 7 or the maximum scale. Previous level was 5. With level 7, this means that the nuclear crisis in Fukushima nuclear power plant equivalent to the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986 ago.
According to Japan¡Çs Nuclear Safety Agency, the emission of radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is about 10 percent of the amount of radiation which was detected at Chernobyl. But, even though the level is 7, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is different from the nuclear crisis that occurred at Fukushima nuclear power plant.
¡ÈRegarding the volume of radioactive material released, our estimates show that it is about 10 percent of what was released by Chernobyl,¡É said a spokesman for Japan¡Çs Nuclear Safety Agency Hidehiko Nishiyama, told reporters as reported by the AFP news agency (4/12).
¡ÈIn Chernobyl, there is an acute exposure to high levels of radiation and 29 people died because of it. This¡Çs not like that in Fukushima,¡É he continued.
¡ÈIn Chernobyl, the reactors exploded. ¡Ä In Fukushima, reactors remained intact even though we see some leakage,¡É he added.
