今週号は先週号に引き続き
石川真生さんのエッセー最終号を掲載します。
「アメリカ全国を回らねば」と現在の心境を語ってもらいました。
またNY在住のアーティスト、折田裕子さんからの寄稿をお届けします。

■ニューヨークで写真展を！ その３
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
１０月２４日のＰＳ１の全体オープニングは大勢が来てそりゃもう、
にぎやか、にぎやか。ヨーロッパ、アジア、アメリカ各地から観客が
やって来た。私達の写真展会場の反応は、「こんなことがあるなんて
知らなかった。初めて見る写真ばかりだ。これはアメリカ人が見ない
といけない写真だ」という意見が大半で好評だった。やってよかったわ。
感激したね、あたしゃ。
ＰＳ１というのは、知らなかったけど知名度が高いのよね。「ＰＳ１で
やるのよ」と言うとアートをやっている人はだいたい知っていて、
「わーっ、すごい！」と、うらやましがられた。私達写真家は知らな
かったけど、世界中からアーティストが参加する現代美術館なんだっ
て。おかげで私達が宣伝しなくても連日世界中から見学者が来るので
大助かり。ありがたいことだわ。誰かが言っていた。「世界へデビュー
する第一歩の場所ですよ、ＰＳ１は」。
後日、写真展会場に「感想文を書いてください」と紙を置いたら結構
みんな書いてくれてる。詳しい内容は私のホムページの「talk」に載せ
てるので見てね。会場でガードマンをしている若い女の子が、「他の
会場よりもここの展示会場が一番いいわ」と言ってくれた。うれしいね。
会場の外ではニュージャージーに住む私の叔母、定子・与那覇・トー
シーを始め１０人のニューヨーク沖縄県人会のメンバーによる沖縄の
唄、サンシン、踊りでオープニングを盛り上げてくれた。ズラッと観客
が取り囲み大受け。みんな興味深々で見ていた。私は沖縄人としての
「誇り」で感激。こういう時に自分達の文化を見直すのよね、人って。
最後はもちろん沖縄恒例のカチャーシーで幕。外国人の飛び入り参加
もあって楽しかったわ。
１０月１７日の写真展オープンから一ヶ月半余り、みんな帰っちゃって、
残っているのは私一人。私が現在住んでいるアパートの家主の照屋勇賢
さんは私と入れ替えに沖縄に帰っていて不在なの。
アパートには沖縄や東京からやって来た女の子達が多い時は６人いたの
で、そりゃもうにぎやかだったわ。
「高いホテルなんて泊まらないで、みんなで雑魚寝しよう」と呼び掛け
たらいっぱいになっちゃった。最初は比嘉豊光さんもいたけど、さすが
に女だらけになったので別の知り合いのところに移っちゃった。という
よりか、追い出した？
比嘉さんが撮影した映画の編集を手がけた田中藍さんや武山忠司さんも
東京からやって来て、ビデオでの記録係りやなんやかんやと手伝って
くれた。かようにしていろんな人達がいろんな形で手伝ってくれたん
です。ほんと、みんなには感謝だわ。
ただ１つ残念なのは、「みんなでアメリカに、ニューヨークに乗り込
もう！」と勢い込んでいたのに、ビザなどの都合で韓国からはアン
ヘリョンさんただ一人しか来れなかったこと。昨年は全員が日本での
写真展とシンポジウムに参加できたことを考えると、残念！
私は写真展の最終日（１２月１３日）を見届けて、予定通り１２月
１６日（日本時間）には帰国するわよ。
ＰＳ１での写真展の次は、「やりましょう」と名乗りを上げてくれた
大学もあるし、アメリカ全国巡回展ができたらいいな、といろんな人
に声を掛けているところ。
「アメリカ人に見せたい」と始めた写真展ですもの、アメリカ全国を
回らねば。心当たりのある方はご一報を。

■アートの見る夢

私がP.S.1に赴いた当日、美術館は他２つのグループ展のオープ
ニングとも並行し、アートファンで賑わっていた。「永続する瞬間」
展会場には、日本からのメディア関係者が目立ち、なにやら仰々しい
特殊な雰囲気が漂っていたが、厳粛な面持ちで閲覧する観客の間を、
突然、３人の女性パフォーマーがヴァイオリンを片手にけたたましい
音を奏でながら走り回り人々の目を惹く。笑う人、眉を顰める人、耳
を塞ぐ人様々。まるで、ここがあくまでもニューヨークのコンテンポ
ラリー・アートの舞台であることを見せつける様であった。そんな会
場の佇まい、基地問題の「シリアスさ」をそのまま纏う観客にまじっ
て、アートを鑑賞しにきた観客の「戸惑い」「興味」そして「批評」
は、展覧会キュレーターが写真展開催において提示した課題への回答
を直接示しているように見えた。
興味深く見入る観客からは「こんな横暴は許せない。」という怒りや
同情の感想が聞こえた。ニューヨークには沖縄が米軍基地が占領する
島である事を知る人が意外と多く、私が沖縄出身と知ると、米軍の事
をコメントされることもしばしばであった。しかし、兵士達の無法や
軍の横暴は、「知らざれる事実」だろう。特に、ノ・スンテックさん
の写真は、韓国における少女の圧死事件で爆発した、米軍に対する群
衆の怒りの声を、ストレートに記録し、「反米」のメッセージ全面で
伝えてくる。それらの写真は、アメリカの正義というもが、力の法則
をもとに成り立つものである事を弾劾し、アメリカの信じる「正義の
絶対性」の不完全さと支配と非支配者の関係における不平等を「怒り
」と「群衆」の強烈なイメージで伝える。その群衆が支える大きな一
つの韓国旗とアナだらけで分散した星条旗の対比写真は、アメリカ人
を居心地悪く立ち止まらせる十分なパワーを持つだろう。（二人の少
女の死が「国旗」に象徴されていく過程は、普遍的な現象でもあり興
味深い。そして"United Power" が国を越えて、平和への意思として
開放に進む事を祈らずにはいられない。)
一方で、「政治的すぎるんだよね」という非常にショッキングで、そ
の言葉の意図を疑うコメントを日本人の作曲家から聞いたし、ある
アートギャラリーのオーナーは、外で行われていたエイサーと三線の
パフォーマンスに「一体なんでここでフォークロアのダンスなんかや
っているの？」と苦々しく話してかけてきたりもした。沖縄の歴史や
文化、社会事情などを説明すると「それは驚いた。」と突然興味を持
ち始め、「是非訪れてみたい。」と興奮気味になったが、私には「ド
キュメンタリー」と「アート」の舞台の落差をしみじみと感じた瞬間
だった。そして正直言って、「人は見たい物しか見ない」と実感した
のはこの時だ。「事実を知る」ことと「事実を理解する事」の差は大
きい。アメリカの５０％の「事実を理解しよう」とする人々と５０％
の「事実を理解してもらうべき人達」に、事実を伝えるために、作品
の伝える趣旨が、新聞の一面写真として終わってしまわないために、
この展覧会に課された次の課題は非常に重い。

『InterCommunication』No.51に載っている当写真展キュレター・
木幡和枝さんの文章を興味深く読んだ。「記録する者」＝写真家と
「展示する者」＝キュレター／展示会場側との緊張関係がこの写真展の
成り立ちに刻まれているということ。政治とアートを区分けしようと
する場には、このような緊張関係はアートをめぐって生まれないはずだ。
この緊張関係は政治とアートが切っても切り放せないものであること、
そしてこの緊張関係こそが新たな対話、表現、コミュニケーションを
生み出すのだということを物語っているように思えた。
次号もNY発のレポート、エッセイを掲載します。
