August: Bugs and Insects / Things We Eat

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your (short) summer break.

We had quite a few water play days postponed, due to the weather, in July, but the first week of August was packed full of playing with the pools. Although we packed everything up over break, we had a lot of fun playing games in the water.

This month's (August) themes have been Things We Eat and Bugs and Insects. Additionally, we have focused on the letters Ii and Jj.

For Things We Eat, we have had a great time asking what kinds of foods you (the students) like and making crazy food combinations.

"Do you like lasagna?" 

"Yes, I do."

"Do you like milkshakes?"

"Yes, I do."

"Do you like lasagna milkshakes?"

"No, I don't. Yucky."

The older students have been able to do more of a Q&A discussion, as well as listening to hints and guessing the different foods.

For Bug and Insects, we did a lot of discussing those special small friends but had the most fun with the NIKS bug hunt game. The students would search for small wooden coins of different colors, which represented various insects. These coins were placed all around the classroom. After finding all of the "bugs" we would tell our friends what we caught. 

"Let's go catch some bugs!"

"What did you catch?"

"I caught three beetles."

 

We were even able to combine food and insects into one "Yummy or Yucky?" game. It was bugsxcellent! Haha. :)

短かった夏休みも終わり、新学期が始まりました。
夏休みはいかがお過ごしでしたでしょうか。

8月は天気にも恵まれて、１週目は毎日水遊びをすることが出来ました。
子どもたちは、水遊びをとても楽しんでいたので、プールや水遊びのおもちゃを片付ける際には少し寂しそうな様子がありました。
また来年も遊ぼうね！


今月（８月）のテーマは、「虫」と「食べ物」についてです。
また、アルファベットでは、「I・J」を学びました。

「食べ物」では、子どもたちにどんな食べ物が好きか質問したり、様々な食べ物を混ぜ合わせて料理を考えてみたりして、楽しみました。

"Do you like lasagna?" 　　　　　　　　　　ラザニアは好きですか？

"Yes, I do."　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　はい！ 

"Do you like milkshakes?"　　　　　　　　　ミルクシェイクは好きですか？ 

"Yes, I do."　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　はい！

"Do you like lasagna milkshakes?"　　　　　ラザニアミルクシェイクは好きですか？

"No, I don't. Yucky."　　　　　　　　　　　　いいえ。美味しくないです。

また、年長・年中さんは、難しい質問にも挑戦しました。
ヒントを聞いて何の食べ物かを当てるゲームもして楽しみました。

「虫」では、虫取りゲームが子どもたちのお気に入りゲームになりました。
それは、小さな積み木を虫に見立てて、その虫たちを部屋中を探しに行くゲームです。 
虫を見つけたら、捕まえ、自分のバケツに入れます。
最後にみんなでどんな虫を捕まえられたか、話し合いました。

This month's (July) themes have been At the Sea and At the Zoo. Additionally, we have focused on the letters G and H.

For both themes, we have had a lot of overlapping language and ideas - "Let's go to the zoo." "Let's go to the sea/beach." - and a lot of discussion about the different animals we and find at each place and sometimes find at both!

One of the highlights of talking about At the Zoo was pretending to move as the different animals move. We sang a few songs that incorporated this movement as well. 

Ex).

I can waddle like a penguin.

I can slither like a snake.

I can jump like a kangaroo. 

We also played a kind of zoo board game where we would match the animals with the places they would live in the zoo.

We also pretended to take trips to the zoo and the aquarium and talk about the different animals we wanted to see and the ones we did see. "I want to see a koala." "I saw an octopus." and other variations like "Look! I see a dolphin." "Me, too." 

We saw all kinds of animals!

For older students, we did more of a dialogue to talk about our experiences with the sea and zoo and asked more open-ended questions to help stimulate their imaginations and test their ability.

We have also had water play scheduled for quite a few days this month, but unfortunately, we have been rained out on more that one occasion. Hopefully, next month will be a different story.

【日本語訳】
今月（7月）のテーマは、「動物園」と「海の生き物」についてです。
また、アルファベットでは、「G・H」を学びました。
 
今回のテーマは、「動物園に行こう！」「海に行こう！」のゲームを通して、英語を学び、学んだ言葉を何回も復習して身につけました。また、生き物の特徴や生息している場所について話し合い、動物園にも海にも共通して生息している生き物を見つけ出すことができました。

「動物園」では、歌に合わせて動物の動き方を真似っこして遊びました。
 Ex).　　　　　　　　　　　　例） 歌♪

I can waddle like a penguin.　　　ペンギンみたいによちよち歩けるよ。 

I can slither like a snake.　　　　 ヘビみたいにクネクネできるよ。

I can jump like a kangaroo.  　  　カンガルーみたいにジャンプができるよ。

ボードゲームを使って、どの動物が動物園のどこに住んでいそうか考えてマッチングしたりもしました。

また、動物園や水族館をお部屋に作り、見たい生き物や見たことのある生き物について話し合いました。

"I want to see a koala." 「コアラが見たい！」
"I saw an octopus." 　　「タコを見たよ。」
and other variations like "Look! I see a dolphin." "Me, too." 他にも「見て！イルカがいるよ。」「私も見たよ！」などの子どもたちの発言がありました。

 年長さんや年中さんは、動物園や海に行った時の思い出についてお友達同士で質問をし合い、コミュニケーションを取りながら、想像力を養いました。

今月から水遊びが始まりましたが、雨の日が多く、少ししかできませんでした…
来月はたくさん晴れて、もっと水遊びができますように☆☆

This month's (June) themes have been Numbers+ and My House. Additionally, we have focused on the letters E and F.

For Numbers+, we have done heaps of counting with lots of games involving the collecting of things. Get your baskets ready because we're going on a coin hunt :)

We have also highlighted daily themes that involve numbers that might have been otherwise unnoticed by the students.

"How many days in a week?"

"How many months in a year?"

"How many numbers on a clock?"

"How many fingers on two feet?"

We were counting all kinds of things!

For older students, we also dived into ordinals, with a focus on the calendar, and counting by tens and hundreds.

My House has been an exciting topic for the kiddos as well. They love talking about the different rooms of their homes, whether it be a house or an apartment. 

Some of their favorite activities have involved setting up imaginary houses and hiding objects, as well as themselves, in the different rooms.

"How many boys are in the living room?"

 "There are four boys in the living room."

"Where is Daniel teacher?"

 "He is in the kitchen."

One of the students also suggested making the house a haunted one and searching for ghosts instead of people.

The idea was so creative and delightfully unexpected :)

今月（6月）のテーマは「私の家について」と「数字」です。
またアルファベットでは、「E・F」を学びました。

「数字」では、
物を集めるゲームをして、集めた物で数を数える練習をたくさんしました。
カゴを持ってコイン集めに行こう！

また、日常生活にある色々なものも数えました。
「１週間は何日かな？」
「１年間は何ヶ月あるかな？」
「時計に数字はいくつあるかな？」
「 足の指は何本あるかな？」

年長さんや年中さんは、
さらにカレンダーを使って序数を学んだり、10から100まで数えたりしました。


「私の家について」は、
子どもたちがとてもワクワクしていたお題です。子どもたちは、自分のお家やマンションの部屋ついて話し合うことが大好きで、それぞれの違いについて知ることができました。

自分たちでそれぞれの部屋にオブジェクトを配置するなど、架空の家に関するアクティビティーが子どもたちのお気に入りです。 

"How many boys are in the living room?"
リビングには男の子は何人いるかな？ 

 "There are four boys in the living room."

リビングには男の子が４人います。

"Where is Daniel teacher?"
ダニエル先生はどこかな？ 

 "He is in the kitchen." 
キッチンにいてます。

あるお友達は、 幽霊屋敷を作って、人の代わりに幽霊を探す遊びを提案してくれました。
それは創造的で思いもよらない魅力的なアイデアでした:)
