Joe先生 剣道４段 快挙！

今年の７月１７日、沢山の受験者の中から、審査員、殆ど全員一致で、剣道４段にみごと合格されました。

先生は、柔道や合気道もされていますが、特に合気道は「段のつけようがない位」上手だと、 先生の所属されるグループのアメリカ、オーストラリア、日本の本部道場の方々から評価されています。

本業の英語教育についても極めているといってもよいくらいで、テンプル大学院で、博士号まで取得されている、文字通り「文武両道」の先生です。

このブログをご覧になれている皆さんが英語に研鑽されていらっしゃるように、先生も英語指導と武道への修錬に日々研鑽されています。

先生の英語指導は、全然英語が出来なくても、市販されている教材でも何でもよいので、たとえ上手ではなくても、英語でコミュニケーションしようとする事が大事だと言われています。そのために、日本人なら自然に身に付いている日本文化を使って、英語で表現したり、自分の意見を英語で伝えることが一番の英語上達の道だと、英語で考える方法を教えています。

本校の現学生、卒業生、ゼロから英語を始めた学生達で、先生のクラスを真剣に受け、積極的にクラスに参加した学生で、英検準１級・TOEIC700•TOEFL500程度以上をとれなかった学生はほとんどいません。

みなさん、こんにちは。新しい春がやってきましたね。
布池外語専門学校では、３月１１日に卒業式、４月５日に入学式を行いました。
前期の授業がスタートし、一人一人、一生懸命に学んでおられます。
今日は、ウェンディ先生からのメッセージを掲載します。




Language Learning and Hobbies

In August one of my former students returned from studying at University of Portland. While in the United States, she actively participated in club activities at the university and made great efforts to avoid speaking Japanese. Upon her return, the student made efforts to find a position in a company that would allow her to use her English skills. While using English at work is a great prospect, she felt like this would not be enough to maintain her English level, especially in regard to everyday conversation.
As we talked about the situation, I thought about how I maintain my Japanese speaking ability now that I am not taking a Japanese class. For the past five years or so, I have been taking yoga classes here in Nagoya. At first trying a new activity in Japanese was quite difficult because I neither had the vocabulary needed nor much knowledge about yoga. Once I learned the yoga vocabulary, I found the class a great way to meet new people as well as to enjoy my new hobby. The other class members are very nice, which has given me an opportunity to make new friends as well as to practice conversation and become exposed to idiomatic phrases that I would not be able to learn if I just took a conversation class with a textbook.続きを読む

THE CULTURE COLUMN 2

　Joe先生は剣道３段、合気道２段の日本の武道愛好家です。今回は、その合気国際大会についてのコラムです。

　合気道というのは、武術の一つで、植芝盛平(1883-1969)先生が、創始者で、 人格形成等、精神性が重視される護身術です。 理念的には力による争いや勝ち負けを否定し、合気道の技を通して敵との対立を解消し、「和合」「万有愛護」を実現するような境地に至ることを理想としているそうです。Joe先生の所属される光気会合気道では、正しい型というのは、自然で、リラックスしている時に出来る型だそうで、その型の運用によって"相手の力と争わず"に相手の攻撃を無力化し、 体を緊張させないで、「脱力」ということが大切な事だそうです。国際大会には、各国から約２００名の合気道家が光気会の創立者の丸山会長の元に集合され、大イベントが実施されました。確かに参加者同士には、言語の壁はあったとしても、今でも、毎日、写真やメールが送られて来たりして、参加者全員、その体験は、よい経験となったそうです。続きを読む

TOEFL Writing Tips 2 - The Integrated Writing Task

　When completing the Integrated Writing Task, the test taker is asked to summarize information in a reading and listening passage, then relate the two together. To summarize the passages, one must know which information is important to the overall meaning of the passage, and which is not important. Therefore, knowledge of the rhetorical style of reading passages is key to deciding what information should go into the notes, and what is not necessary.Looking at a short reading passage, we can see the format of an English paragraph or essay.


　The Black Plague is the disease that swept through Europe in the 1300s, killing up to two thirds of the entire population. It would return once every generation or so for the next several hundred years. Eventually, the rise of germ theory found that this strain of the bubonic plague was caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis. This microorganism was spread from rats to humans via parasitic fleas. Improved public sanitation combined with antibiotics helped eradicate the disease in Europe.

生きるヒント Randy Pausch教授の「Last Lecture」 ~少年時代の夢を本気でかなえる~

　今一番、皆さんにとって、大切な事は何でしょうか。来年、希望の大学に入学する事でしょうか。留学先へのTOEFL等の入学要件が満たされる事でしょうか。英語の上達でしょうか。就職やご自分の健康、ご家族や友人との事でしょうか。

　その大切な事、自分の密かな夢をどのように実現するかについてのヒントになりそうなものに極最近出会いました。７月２５日の事でした。アメリカの友人に教えられて You Tubeで Last Lecture (最後の授業)という動画を見ました。世界でのべ６０００万人以上がアクセスし、感動したと、注目を集めている映像です。アメリカではよく「Last Lecture」という言葉を用いて、「これが人生最後の講義だとしたら何を教えるか」と、自己を律することにより、価値ある講義を生みだすことができ、シリーズものもあるという事です。

　You Tubeの今回のLast Lectureは、ペンシルベニア州カーネギーメロン大学において、バーチャルリアリティーの第一人者であり、コンピュータサイエンス界の 世界的権威 のランディ パウシュ(Randy Pausch) 教授の講義でした。続きを読む

　今回は、Joe先生のコラムをご紹介します。

　Joe先生は、ニューヨーク市の橋を渡ったところにあるニュージャージー州の出身です。先生は、日本の文化と武道が大好きです。特に、神社やお寺を見て歩くのが好きです。お地蔵さんの顔や菩薩像などを見ると、何か審美的なものを感じるそうです。

　今は、 西国三十三観音霊場参りで、３３カ所の内２１カ所に巡礼されたそうです。近い内にこの巡礼を終えて、又、次の巡礼を目指されるそうです。毎月このニューズレターに、先生の体験記とお気に入りの写真が掲載されます。ご自分の体験から感じる幸せを、みなさんと分ち合いたいと提案して下さいました。英語でアメリカ人のお寺参りの感想を聞くなんて、余りチャンスも多く有りません。

TOEFL Writing Tips 1

An Introduction to the Writing Section of the TOEFL Internet Based Test

　The TOEFL Test is generally used as an assessment tool for non-native English speakers who want to enter universities and colleges in English speaking environments. It is also sometimes used by employers or government agencies to test employees' English proficiency (Macgillivray, et. al). Introduced around the world in 2006, the TOEFL Internet Based Test (ibt) includes four sections; reading, listening, speaking, and writing and departs from other versions of the TOEFL Test because it attempts to test English language learners' understanding of structure as well as their communicative ability. Unlike previous versions of the TOEFL Test, the ibt integrates structure into each section of the test, while the speaking and writing sections integrate more than one skill such as reading/listening, and speaking or writing. Test takers often have difficulty with the writing section of the TOEFL Test because they do not have sufficient practice with English writing skills such as notetaking, organization, and writing within a time limit. TOEFLライティングのヒント

　今回は、本校のネイティブ講師、Wendy先生の教えて下さっている「TOEFL のWriting テストをどうすれば制覇できるか」についてお話します。

　TOEFLテストは、海外大学に入学するネィティブスピーカーでない学生、又、政府や他の機関に勤務する人達の英語査定テストです。2006 年より 、TOEFLは、従来の内容に加えて、もっとコミュにカティブな英語力が査定できるように、ペーパー形式や、コンピューター形式からインターネット形式に変わりました。大きな変化は、Speakingが導入された事、Writing が、自分の考えで書いていくIndependent Essayと、ListeningやReadingと連結してWritingをするIntegrated Writingがあります。

英語力をつけるヒント −アメリカの高校生と日本の高校生の違いとは−

　今回は、アメリカの高校生のLiterature Classes （文学）では、どんな文学を読んでいるのかを見てみましょう。これを知る事によって、将来アメリカに留学する際の参考になります。又、日本の大学に進学する際には、受験英語を学ぶことになるため、長い文章を読むより、抜粋文を読む事が多いと思います。例えば、「センター試験、新出題傾向対応英語読解」とか、「センター試験英語問題集」、「センター試験英語合格の法則」というようなものです。

　もちろん、過去問に即した学習訓練は必要ですが、本当の意味の英語力、さらに言えば、国語でも必要な理解力の養成には、何か一冊でも、きちんと読んでみることが理解力をつける近道となります。そしてそれが、アメリカの高校生も、読んでいるものだと考えると楽しくなりませんか？続きを読む

英語の専門学校や海外大学卒業後の進路

　これから本格的に英語を勉強しようと考える方の中には、「英語の学校を卒業した後の将来はどうなるんだろう」と漠然とした不安をお持ちになられる方の声を聞くことがあります。特にそれが海外大学を卒業してからの話になると、さらに分からなくなる人もいるようです。


では、英語を学習した後、卒業生の先輩達はどのような将来に向かって歩んでいるのでしょうか。今回は、そんな皆さんが近い将来に経験される「就職」についてお話したいと思います。
