PHJ’s East Japan Disaster Reconstruction Support activities are implemented mainly at Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture. In cooperation of the kesennuma Medical Association (KMA), PHJ surveyed the requirements of medical equipment and office fixtures by the medical facilities that suffered serious damages at the March 11 disaster.
Based on the list of requirements prepared by KMA, early December 2011, PHJ donated 168 items of medical equipment and 282 items of office fixture and furniture to 20 hospitals and clinics.
On December 16, PHJ Chairman Kohtani, President Kimura and staff Yokoo visited Kesennuma. The purpose of our visit was to hand over the office fixture and furniture donated from Ericsson Japan and medical equipment donated from PHJ.

The first agenda was the proposal from Dunhill Japan to donate 200 art posters (130 x 95cm) featuring the JFA Japan Team and Director as samurais. Dr. Otomo was pleased to see the bright poster and expressed his gratitude that not only the soccer fans but also many citizens will be encouraged with the poster.
(Dunhill shops are carrying out the campaign to support PHJ’s East Japan Disaster Donation with the proceeds of this art poster. Please refer to the related website.)

Further we discussed the donation of 800 pieces of pens from Zebra Co., Ltd. as well as 400 sets of PHJ’s original 2012 calendar. The KMA advised us that these items will be donated to the city’s administrative and educational facilities including all elementary and secondary schools.
After lunch we visited the Morita Clinic first. The clinic received chemotherapy/dialysis chair, centrifugal dehydrator, optometric monitor, etc.
(Morita Clinic’s first floor was totally damaged at the disaster. Presently, medical services are extended using a temporarily repaired reception and consulting room.)

Further, we visited seven medical facilities including Inawashiro Hospital, Mori Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic, Hikariga Oka and Shunpo-en for patients and old people, and Utatsu Hachiban Clinic. We were able to confirm the medical equipment installed at each clinic.

One of the seven clinics is Utatsu Hachiban Clinic located in Minami Sanriku-cho far from the center of the Kesennuma City. About 70% of the residents died in tsunami and the remaining residents were staying at temporary housings on the hillside. The Clinic is the only medical facilities in the area and we met many old people and children visiting the clinic on that day.

Utatsu Hachiban Clinic and the doctor’s house were washed away by the tsunami.
However, the doctor stayed at the area to extend medical services and opened the clinic at a different site.

Both of us were truly encouraged to see the doctors and medical staffs remaining in the disaster areas to continue to provide medical services to the people.
