個でありつつ共にある社会運動のために――運動史に学ぶ読書会

　社会運動は連帯を求める。他者と協働することで、一人では届かないような力を得ることができる。その一方で、他者との関係は個に影響を与えざるをえない。社会運動は個を制約し、時に押し潰すものとしてイメージされる。確かにそうした負のイメージを裏付ける実例は容易に挙げることができよう。だが、それを社会運動の必然的帰結と見るのは浅薄な理解だ。運動史からは、個を活かしつつなされた連帯、あるいは少なくともそうあろうとした社会運動の苦闘の跡をたどることができる。
　2025年秋、『可能性としてのベ平連』および『自由への終わりなき模索』という運動史の本がほぼ同時期に刊行された。前者は1960年代半ばに始まるベトナム反戦運動の日本各地での展開を扱った論文集であり、後者は半世紀を越えて存続するミニコミ書店「模索舎」の歴史を資料と当事者の証言からまとめた記録である。二冊は扱う時代も異なり、一見共通性に乏しい。だが、「大学ベ平連」経験者が模索舎を始めたという両運動の接点のみならず、運動のあり方においても、個でありつつの協働を行うことは、それぞれにとって大きなテーマだった。
　読み応えあるこの二冊をあえて重ね読むことで、今なお残る課題とそれへの手がかりを得たい。さらに、上記テーマとも通底する鶴見俊輔の思想を扱ったベ平連に関連する近年のもう一冊も議論の材料に加え、社会運動史から学ぶ場を持つことにした。

ノンフィクション作家。早稲田大学政経学部在学中からベ平連に参加。前日本ペンクラブ会長。著書に『墜落の夏—日航123便事故全記録』（中公文庫）ほか多数。

八田紀代子（はった・きよこ）
元長崎ベ平連。1968年1月末に結成された長崎ベ平連の活動に結成当初から関わり自宅を長崎ベ平連の事務局とする。現在まで長崎ベ平連の仲間たちとの交流を継続。

港那央（みなと・なお）
東京外国語大学大学院総合国際学研究科博士後期課程修了、博士（学術）。現在、独立行政法人日本学術振興会特別研究員-PD（立教大学）、津田塾大学非常勤講師。博士前期課程在籍時より長崎ベ平連の研究を始め、現在もオーラル・ヒストリーの実践によるベ平連研究を継続。『可能性としてのベ平連』執筆者。

元福岡ベ平連。高校3年の時に「一人べ平連」を始め、福岡で行われていた「十の日デモ」に参加し福岡のベ平連と出会う。岩国市の反戦喫茶「ほびっと」設立・運営にも参加。

市橋秀夫（いちはし・ひでお）
埼玉大学教員。専門はイギリス近現代社会史。埼玉大学に所蔵されていた地域ベ平連資料（現在立教大学共生社会研究センター所蔵）と出会い、福岡の十の日デモやベ平連参加者のオーラル・ヒストリーと文字史料を蒐集している。『可能性としてのベ平連』共編者。

高原 太一（タカハラ タイチ）
1989年、神奈川県川崎市生まれ。中学2年時の社会科見学で砂川をめぐる。国際基督教大学3年次のフィールドワークで、砂川と「再会」。東京外国語大学大学院進学後も、砂川闘争研究を継続。2022年「米軍立川基地拡張反対運動の再検討──「流血の砂川」から多面体の歴史像へ」で博士号（学術）取得。現在、成城大学グローカル研究センター・ポストドクター研究員／大学非常勤講師。本書が初の単著となる。

Il seminario raccontera, attraverso l’esperienza del Centro di
Documentazione Flavia Madaschi, la nascita e lo sviluppo degli
archivi LGBTQIA+ in Italia come frutto di un’azione collettiva dal
basso. Verranno ripercorse le strategie e le pratiche che hanno
permesso di preservare e valorizzare le memorie delle comunita
queer. L’incontro offrira spunti e buone pratiche per ispirare la
creazione di nuovi archivi e percorsi di memoria condivisa con
una discussione che considera il futuro di archivi simili in Giappone.

This seminar will explore, through the experience of the Flavia
Madaschi Documentation Center, the origins and development
of LGBTQIA+ archives in Italy as the result of grassroots collective
action. It will trace the strategies and practices that have helped
preserve and enhance the memories of queer communities. The
event will offer insights and good practices to inspire the creation
of new archives and shared memory projects, with a discussion
that considers the future of similar archives in Japan.

What is Anti-racism?

Professor Manuela Bojadžijev has long been a leading figure in critical
migration and racism studies in Germany. More recently, she has extended
her research to broader analyses of contemporary capitalism, focusing on
mobility, labor, borders, logistics, infrastructure, and digitalization.
Her publications include Die windige Internationale: Rassismus und
Kampfe der Migration (2008); and, as editor, Handbuch Rassismusforschung
(2025), Solidaritaten transformieren. Praktiken und Infrastrukturen in
der Migrationsgesellschaft (2025), as well as Etienne Balibar’s
collected writings Rasse, Geschlecht, Gattung. Zur Frage der
anthropologischen Differenzen (2025).

Abstract
In the early 1970s, Japan saw the emergence of three dynamic and overlapping communities of women and adolescent girls who challenged Japanese gender and sexual norms: the women’s liberation (ūman ribu) movement, the lesbian community, and a sphere comprised of artists and fans of queer shōjo manga (girls’ comics). In this talk, James Welker will discuss Transfiguring Women in Late Twentieth-Century Japan: Feminists, Lesbians, and Girls’ Comics Artists and Fans, which examines these communities and their cultural import. As he shows, individually and collectively, they found the normative understanding of the category “women” untenable and worked to redefine and expand its meaning by transfiguring ideas, images, and practices selectively appropriated from the “West.” They did so, however, while remaining primarily focused on the local. Welker argues that their transfiguration of Western culture into something locally meaningful had tangible effects far beyond these communities.

三橋俊明さんプロフィール：1947年生まれ。元日大全共闘。1971年に田村正敏らと「無尽出版会」設立、1973年創刊『無尽』を編集。津村喬や元ベ平連の人々と共に、1975年『週刊ピーナッツ』創刊、事務局を担う。保坂展人らの「青生舎」や雑誌『80年代』発行元の「野草社」と同じビルにて、1978年設立の「地球の友・東京」の活動に事務局長として参加。1980年の津村喬『全共闘――持続と転形』（五月社）の出版に協力。榎並重行との共著の形で別冊宝島『東京の正体！』3部作（1986年〜）を刊行。1992年から、吉岡忍らの「エイズを考える会」事務局を担う。1970年代末から、地域・労働運動にも参加した。近年は、『日大闘争――忘れざる日々』編集人、「10・8山��博昭プロジェクト」発起人なども務めている。

The Politics of Non-Politics in Postwar Japan

Title: The Politics of Non-Politics in Postwar Japan

Abstract:
In the late 1960s, a new style of “non-political” social movement
emerged in Japan. Despite aiming at social reforms, these movements
—including environmental, consumer protection, and local improvement
movements—embraced a rhetoric of “non-politics,” disclaiming “ideology”
in exchange for an exclusive focus on “issues.” These paradoxically
“non-political” organizations achieved great success in the political arena,
and by declaring that “anyone can join,” these movements achieved a
significant number of policy goals. As the white-collarization of Japan’s
male workforce continued apace, and high-speed economic growth
allowed social norms emphasizing full-time housewifery to strengthen,
many of these new movements were organized in significant part by
housewives in new exurban housing developments (danchi), as part of
so-called “residents’ movements” (jumin undō). In this talk, I trace the
history of Japan’s “non-political” political activism from the early postwar
to the present, including recent movements against nuclear power plants
and the 2015 Security Bill. I argue that because the wages of “anti-politics”
were so high, this approach became hegemonic in Japanese political
organizing, such that many movements may continue to feel compelled to
embrace it even when they seek more overtly “political” objectives.

Abstract: The early 1970s saw a significant victory for the radical
feminist movement ūman ribu in Japan, which successfully campaigned
against a proposed revision of the Eugenics Protection Law (EPL; Yūsei
hogohō) that threatened women's reproductive autonomy and expanded state
intervention. However, without the leadership of ūman ribu which
disbanded in 1977, new groups were needed to mobilise protest. First and
foremost was the group that came to be known as SOSHIREN - From My Body,
from Women's Bodies (Onna (watashi) no karada kara), founded in 1982,
which spearheaded challenges to the intersection of reproductive
politics and eugenics in Japan for the next three decades. Its diverse
membership underscored a commitment to an intersectional analysis of
reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
This talk examines the pivotal role of ūman ribu and subsequent activism
in challenging eugenic policies and advocating for reproductive justice
in Japan from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. It analyzes how ūman ribu,
sparked by the EPL revision debates, fostered an intersectional critique
of state control and the devaluation of disabled lives, and won a key
victory in the early 1970s. The paper then explores the continuation of
this stance in the post-ūman ribu era, focusing on the emergence of
SOSHIREN in 1982 in response to renewed attempts at revision. Building
on the feminist critiques of the 1970s, SOSHIREN's diverse membership
broadened the focus beyond access to abortion to formulate an inclusive,
intersectional, and explicitly anti-eugenic reproductive politics.
Through SOSHIREN's activism and the legacy of activist Yonezu Tomoko,
this analysis argues that ūman ribu's intersectional ideas 1provided a
crucial foundation for sustained grassroots challenges to eugenics and
the dominant valuation of productivity, ultimately shaping reproductive
justice activism in Japan until 1996 and involving the negotiation of
different activist generations.

内灘基地反対運動は、1952年から53年にかけて、在日アメリカ軍が朝鮮戦争を背景に日本での砲弾試射場の提供を要求したことに端を発した闘争である。石川県の人々はもちろん、全国の政党、労働団体、学生、そして大宅壮一、石川達三、清水幾太郎たち文化人がつながりを作りながら反対運動を展開し、「戦後初の全国的な基地反対闘争」として、社会運動史に名を刻んでいる。

沖縄の基地反対運動が常に注目されているが、沖縄とはまた異なる内灘闘争の記憶とインパクトを、私たちは「いまの問題」としてどのように引き受けられるだろうか。「基地問題」と私たちの日常を接続させる文化的な回路を、どうしたら作り出せるだろうか。

Manipulating the Message: a Multi-modal Analysis Investigating Far-right Reappropriation of Japanese Anime

This article investigates the far-right's cultural misappropriation
of Japanese anime. While the far-right has long engaged in
manipulating narratives and imagery across trending topics on
the internet, the specific appeal of anime's fictional worlds
remains under-researched. The study addresses the research
gap by answering the question: How does the far-right
strategically and communally manipulate themes, narratives,
and imagery from Japanese anime to advance their ideological
agendas and ontological positionality? To answer this question
and expand our understandings, the research employs a
multi-modal analytical approach combined with netnography,
enabling a comprehensive examination of the far-right's
engagement with these fantasy worlds across various storytelling
mediums–including visual, audio, and textual data. Additionally,
netnographic fieldnotes capture the dynamics of community
discussions and co-created comprehensions of these televised
stories that contribute to the far-right's interest in anime as belief
-reinforcing entertainment. The project explores the hashtag
#animeright, analysing hundreds of posts and their related
discussions on mainstream and fringe social media platforms
across various anime series. The ensuing findings provide a
nuanced understanding of how the far-right exploits popular
culture, particularly anime, to appeal to and influence online
ideological positions and ontological perspectives. Moreover,
it illustrates how the community attempts to corroborate and
establish collective normalcy and non-normative desires
through the fantastical (and oftentimes extreme) nature of the
content. These results are not only relevant as a first-of-its-kind
investigation into this cultural manipulation but they also provide
a future framework for researchers interested in studying similar
manifestations across the internet and other widespread pop-culture
phenomena.

Jonathan Collins is a PhD candidate at Charles and Leiden
University, concentrating on the rise of the far right as both a
social movement and threat for violent mobilisation. His other
areas of interest include more broadly radicalisation, terrorism,
conspiracies, and online extremism.
