Thought for the Day, Jan. 2007

”今月のThought for the Day” Mikiko Bando

How was your new year’s holiday?
New year means “正月(shougatsu)” in Japan. And we have several words relating to 正月 in Japan. January first is called 元旦(gantan) new year’s day.
New year’s days continue for 3 days ,三が日(sanganichi).
When 三が日 finish and people start to work or go to school, we have new year’s day again for women called 女正月(onna shougatsu).
Since the old days women have been so busy with serving dishes for their family and relatives .So women enjoy their own 女正月(onna shougatsu)and relax.
There is another new year from the lunar calendar ,旧正月(kyu shougatsu)in February.
Chinese and Korean people celebrate new year during 旧正月.

As for me, my new year’s days were quiet. I met some relatives to have dinner together.
We visited the shrine to pray for happiness ,health, and peace throughout the year.
Oh, I did one unusual thing this year. I checked my sign in Horoscope for 2007.
My sign is Aquarius .It says “ Be as ambitious as you like ,but watch your spending.
Put your feet firmly on the solid ground. Let the common sense rule your wallet and pass.”
I really appreciate this comment. Without this words, I might plan to buy junk food or
clothes on the spring sale. I really forgot to reflect myself and tried to see just the bright
future. I’m sorry to say that to this year’s auspicious symbol “bores” with the image of
rushing anywhere ,but chimpanzees, orangutans, and human beings are the only three
animals who can recognize themselves on the mirror.
