How to set up Japanese Kanna plane

Japanese planes are pulled toward the body, not pushed away. Don't press to down (material will be distorted) .

One blade and two blade kanna

One blade can make the material smoother than double blade kanna, but tend to cause splintering. One blade plane is used the materials that are required beautiful surface.

removing of th blade

when remove the blade, hit the corner of the end of body. Don't hit the center of the end, or body might be cracked .

Kanna blade is made of soft steel base and hard steel what is laminated backside of the blade.

3 kinds of kanna.

New kanna have to be tuned for one of them.

The sole of kanna isn't totally flat. Same part of sole have to be scraped to slip smooth on the material.

A rough cutter (Arachiko) : This plane makes cut boards by saw flat roughly. If you have a power plane, rough cutter would be no need.

B Smoother (Nakashiko)

Most of the planing is performed by this plane.

C finisher

At the end of planing, use this one or two strokes and make the material smooth absolutely. The shaving by finishing plane should be strictly thin (10-20micron)

Honing

About stones

Firstly kanna blade have to be honed with #1000, then it must be finished with #2000 or #3000.

Make flat the surface of stone

The surface of honing stone need to be kept absolutely flat and smooth. Distorted, or scratched stone will hurt blade. Especially for the planes and razors, the flatness of stone is the key factor.

How to make stone flat.

- In order to make flat of the stone, hone it with another stone (#1000) with SHORT strokes

The angle of the stones needs to be changed.

Hone with short strokes. Keep a certain angle.

In order to fix the chipped blade, use #100-#200

Then hone the beveled side with #1000 till a burr slightly comes out.

Then remove the burr with finishing stone (#3000-#4000) .

The angle of the blade edge

How to Uradasi

Back of Nomi and Kanna blades are hollowed in order to make honing easer. As honing, kanna (and Nomi) blade will get shorter and finally can't be honed.

You have to make flat the back of blade with hammering on the an anvil.

Hit lightly, with a pace in 5 hits per a second. Never hit too hard, nor hit the tip of the blade. Or blade would crack.

Honing the backside of blade

Hone with #1000 stone. before honing, stone surface must be made absolutely flat.

Honing of Cap iron

The angle of the edge is made by 3 or 4 strokes on the finishing stone.

The cap iron hove to be touch with no interspace even a light can't through between the blade and the cap iron

Kanna body

Outside of the log has to be formed as the bottom of body.
