今週のジョーク・・・牧師との契約

今週のジョークです。

I heard about this groom【花婿】.
At the wedding rehearsal he said to the minister,
"I'll make a deal with you.
If during the vows you'll leave out 【除く】all that love, honor and obey stuff
I'll give you $100."
He slipped a $100 bill into the ministere's hand, walked away with a smile.

The next day during ceremony the minister said to the man,
"Do you promise to bow down 【従う】 before your wife,
to bring her breakfast in bed, to fulfill her every desire?"
The man gulped in astonishment.【驚きのあまり息をのむ】
He said in a weak voice,
"I do."
約束は？

He then whispered in the minisiter's ear,
"I thought we had a deal?"
The minister handed his money back and said,
"Your wife made me a much better offer."
奥さんの方が一枚上手だったという落ち。
日曜の朝にふさわしいのかなぁ？
一瞬でも場が和めばいいのか。

創薬への努力

Universities stepping up efforts to discover drugs.
Forbesの記事です。

今や、製薬会社はベンチャーや大学の研究に、新薬のシーズを期待するところまで来ている。
自社創薬の投資リスクを減らす意味も大きいとは思うけれど・・・。

記事では、Academic Drug Discovery Consortiumという組織で、
技術やノウハウの行き来を促進させようとしているとある。

記事の最後に著者の本音が書かれている。
何度も見てきたものと何も変わらないように映るようだ。

However, I did get the sense that ADDC members are overpromising on what they can deliver.
In many ways, these institutions sound like a biotech start-up company.
Comments such as “new drug discovery paradigm” and “ we operate with unhindered constraints normally found in pharma” were déjà vu for me.
Furthermore, while many of the discovery efforts that I heard about are at early stages, I didn’t get a sense that these programs are moving with greater speed, efficiency or with a higher degree of success than is happening in industry.

Drug discovery is a very hard endeavor no matter where the labs are located.

本当にそう思う。
大手であろうと、ベンチャーであろうと、はたまた大学であろうと、創薬の難しさには変わりはない。

大きなお金、多くの人手、長い時間がかかるわけだから、
可能性にかける忍耐というか、治療への執念というのか、
夢にかけるロマンのようなものなくして、この仕事はできないだろうし、
かかわっていけないのだろうと思う。

今週のジョーク・・・僕の犬

今週のジョーク

I heard about this man.
He was walking up to a country store.
There was a little boy sitting on the front porch with a huge dog next to him.

The man said, "Son, does your dog bite?"
He said, "No, sir. My dog doesn't bite."
僕の犬は噛まない。
そうか、安心だな。

He reached down to pet him and
the dog took about half of his arm off.
おぉ、話が違うのでは？

He pulled it back and said,
"Son, I thought you said your dog doesn't bite?"
そうだよね。
こら、少年！

The little boy said, "That's not my dog."
ハハハ、やられた。
おもしろいし、かなり教訓的でもあります。

今週のジョーク・・・競馬場

今週のジョークです。

I heard about this southern baptist man named Bill.
He loved to snaek off to the horse races and bet.

And one day after losing almost all of his money,
he noticed a priest stepped down on the tracks and bless a horse.

Sure enough【思った通り】, the horse won first place.
さすが、牧師の祝福は効果あり。

The next race, the priest blessed another horse.
Once again, that horse won.
偶然ではなさそう・・・

So Bill went tothe ATM machine and took out all of his money.
嫌な予感がする・・・やめとけって。

This time, the priest not only touched the horse's forehead,
but his eyes, his ears, and all of his hoofs【蹄、馬の足】.

Feeling confident, Bill bet all of his money.
But right in the middle of the race,
the horse fell over and died.
ほらぁ。

Bill couldn't believe it.
He went to the priest and said,
"What in the world happened?"

The priest said, "That's the problem with you Protestants.
You don't know the difference between a blessing and the last rites【儀式、礼拝】.
なるほど。
ジョークだけど、幾分か教訓的。
日曜の朝には、丁度いいかもしれませんね。

科学者の病・・・パーキンソン

My life with Parkinson's
natureの記事。

natureにこんな個人的な記事が載るとは知らなかった。
若き神経科学者はパーキンソン病にかかっているという話だ。

創薬にかかわる研究者が、対象の病気のことは知っていても、
患者のことについて、どこまで知っているかというと、それは疑問だ。
親しい人に患者がいない限り、難しいだろう。

薬のターゲットは病気だが、それを飲むのは患者である限り、
患者の苦悩を想像することが大切なのだと思う。

個人的なことを綴った著者に感謝したいと思う。
